What do I need to go on Broadband (with Telecom Eireann) using a wireless always on system.....
Apparently it is more complicated than the PC route......

Do I have to upgrade from X 10.2?

    Thanks

Nope. I set up both Windows PC's and Mac's for the Internet, and it is not more complicated. It's about the same, perhaps a bit easier as there tend to be less quirks.

Anyway, all you should need to do is plug in the LAN (read: network) cable of your wireless or DSL modem, and away you go, the eMac will automatically pick up the right settings. Beyond saying that, I'd need to know more about your setup

There's no need to upgrade your system software or anything else. In fact, the other day I plugged a really old Performa (over 10 years old) into my broadband connection. It picked up the settings, no fuss.

Once you're up and running, if you're looking for a good web browser, I recommend trying Firefox. It's free and can be downloaded from www.getfirefox.com

I think the point was that he wanted to use a wireless connection. Easiest thing to do is buy an AirPort from Apple. Make sure you have the software updates aswell... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120121

    P.S. They're called eircom now ;)

If you want to avoid software updates (due to using Airport), then your next option is to use a wireless ethernet adaptor - Netgear WGPS606 is one which I use for my various needs.

Just let this device link up with your Eircom wireless setup and connect your eMac with a LAN cable, and you're off.

Yeah, I agree it's overkill. I stand by my AirPort recommendation (and my google recommendation).

Yes, it is a print server - called as such because it allows a USB printer to be connected.

It also has 4 LAN/ethernet ports - meeting exactly what a bientot wants - with NO requirements on OS version etc.

I specifically chose this because of its support for WPA-PSK. Of course you can go for others, like a gaming adaptor, but do compare the prices and you'll see where I am coming from. Airport costs about EUR70? A WGPS606 (on ebay) costs GBP30 or so.

BTW, you can even use this to hook up other LAN devices :) , not just your eMac.

Incidentally - what eMac are you using? If it is too old, then your choices may be very limited in terms of using Apple's hardware.

Instead of spending money on a wifi card or anything else or OS upgrade, you might consider getting a new iMac now that the prices are as low as €950-1020.

Sell the eMac for a few hundred to offset the cost. You'll have a new computer with the latest version of iLife, Mac OS X Tiger, etc, and won't have to buy a wifi card. That's what I'd probably do.
