I got one from Richer Sounds when they were in the city, you don't need to spend 200 euro though, try Maplins or Peats.

    cheers

Sony still offer them too (amongst others) to accompany their stackign systems. I think it shoudl cost no more than €160 and available in both black and silver.

I'd agree, a basic Project deck will cost about €200 and comes with a decent Ortofon cartridge if memory serves. Great value and head and shoulders over the "big" brands like Sony. The problem with "dj" decks is that they're not designed for those of us who would sit down and simply listen to music, they don't really bother with details but have plenty of punch. A bit tiring in a domestic situation.

Have to disagree with that in relation to a dj turntable not bothering with details, its hard to beat a Technics 1210 deck with a good cartridge and stylus for detail across all ranges (from what I have heard anyway, I know there are seriously good turntables out there, just havent had the pleasure of hearing them).

But in fairness you are paying for a lot of what you dont need if for purely playing vinyl. I use 1210s both for dj use and vinyl listening - CD's dont come close in terms of sound quality (I know, off the point but just wanted to throw that in being a vinyl junkie :) )

No what I said was "they don't really bother with details" - certainly not to the level of good Hifi record decks. If you've ever heard a serious high end deck though a good system you'd know the level of detail I mean... you can hear the drummer scratch his nose, the double bass in "Take 5" is clearly creaking. I'm a bit of a vinyl junkie myself but as my CD playback is so much better than my vinyl I tend not to get out the records too much. Really I'd have to spend about €2,000 to get the level I want.... maybe in 2007:D

Sorry, I thought you were comparing to a budget deck. I would really love to hear a high end turntable, must get a listen someday.

For me though playing my Technics Turntable through my separates beats the CD player anyday...but in fairness I only really play electronic music on vinyl, I dont have other genres of music really on vinyl to compare against CD but I just find CD's a bit "crisp" at times if you know what I mean :) I love the fullness of vinyl.

If going for a Projekt turntable try and get one with a pre-amp built in. That way if your hifi doesnt have a special input for your record player you can run it through another input, such as the video input. I have an older Projekt model and had to buy the preamp, pain in the ar5e. Cloney Audio sell Projekt stuff, else use Ebay.

I think Project do only one deck with an amp built in, the Project Phono 3 SB but that's about €130 dearer than the base model. Get the basic model and then add a Project "phonobox" for about €90. It's a separate phono stage not actually built in - that also means it, and the deck, are separately upgradeable. Check first to see if your amp has a phono input - many do.
