HR want my DOB

My HR office just emailed looking for my date of birth.

Since they can't make employment decisions based on age; why would they need my DOB on file?

I'm only 27 so it's not really an issue: am just suspicious by nature

Insurance, Pension, Health Plan, Backround Check to name but a few of reasons off the top of my head.
Then you could always ask them:)

tbh if theyve sense they can work out your rough age for discriminatory purposes by looking at when you left school/went to college on your C.V.

Did you not put your DOB on your CV when you applied for the job?

I'd be suspicious of anyone who didn't include this bit of info on their CV.

I don't see what you have to be suspicious about. Maybe they're planning on getting you a cake on your birthday!

And certain occupations have statutory minimum age requirements. If a bus company were recruiting trainee bus drivers they would be perfectly entitled to seek persons over 21 years as one has to be that age to apply for a provisional D licence.

Nah, fcuk that. It's probably a plot to discriminate against you.

    Fight the powah.

    Perfectly legitimate question I think

In America they ask for all of that info so they can run a background check on candidates for the job. Check if you've ever been arrested, how in debt you are... Oh, it's a cruel world when they know more about you than your own parents do!

It'll probably be poison cake. Can't trust people in HR ;)

Have they offered you a contract yet or is this before the decision stage? If they've already agreed to offer you a contract, then they're perfectly entitled to ask for your DOB for various reasons.

Maybe someone joined the company with the same name. Easy way to spot who is who???

If you already have the job, then I don't see the issue. There are plenty of reasons to ask for a date of birth. Identification being the least of them.

So that they don't have to scribble-in "He wouldn't tell us" in the space marked "Employee's Date of Birth" on your P60.

That's assuming they're paying PAYE & PRSI on your behalf and that you'd like to qualify for a state pension in 28 years time.
