i recently bought a second hand pc without a dvdrom drive on it. i tried to install the dvdrom from my old pc on it, but i can't get it to work at all. it opens and closes, but that's all.
do i need a disc of some sort or something?
if the answer is yes, then you can just lock this thread because my old pc was also second hand and i didn't get any discs with either of them. well, not that mattered anyway.

Nope no disc required. Is it the only optical drive in there (like is there another CD Writer in there also, or otherwise). You should have two cables coming from the DVD ROM, the power which it sounds like you have and the IDE cable (wide one). Make sure its in correctly and not upside down.

If all else fails check your jumper settings.

I assume windows/your bios has not picked it up?

right. there's the basic cd rom drive that came with it. no other drive attached.
the IDE cable might have been upside down. never thought of that.

i'm not touching the BIOS settings because i don't know enough about them and that's how i ****ed up my last pc.

i'll bump this in 3 or 4 days, when i get around to turning my pc off and opening it up again. or tomorrow. i don't have anything to do then.

Just another thing to look out for, chances are the basic CD ROM in there is set as the master drive so the DVD ROM would have to be set as the slave. Pictures of the jumper settings on the rear of the drive is below.

yeah. the cd rom is set as the master drive. i tried putting the dvd rom in its place, but the pc wouldn't start. something about not being able to load the operating system.
i also have a dvd rewriter that i can't get working on it either. this one.. it worked fine on my old pc.

When you put the DVD ReWriter in its place, you ensure that the jumper (jumper-cdrom.jpg) in the same place as the previous one, as this may cause a problem.

It going in and out sounds like you have the power plugged in, but you may have not gotten it plugged into the motherboard. Don't forget to turn off the PC first, or course.
