    Ask a person from Tenerife*.

    *I don't understand how I didn't reply with a hugely sarcastic comment.

I wouldn't risk it tbh, if any of the equipment breaks or anything you're not going to retun to Tenerife to ask it be returned

I think this is the sort of thing we want to be avoiding, isn't it? Is that comment helpful/amusing to anyone but yourself, sinecurea?

Too often I see stuff like that and don't say anything about it, but I'm grumpy enough to bring it up today.

And we wondered why people don't feel welcome here...

And here is the answer to the thread 'Why do people avoid this forum"

Sincurea - if you have nothing worth saying then don't respond!

Now hang on one dang feckin' moment here.
"Any good camera shops in Tenerife?" This is Ireland! How are we supposed to answer a question like that?! It's a stupid place for a question of that nature.

If people can give this person one single item on good advice on camera shops in Tenerife, then I'll be silenced. Google is not allowed - if we can use google to find out, then so can the OP.

If rymus has anything to say to me, then please let him say.
Slumped, you're not a mod of this forum, don't tell me what to say.

OP: I, like nobody else on this forum, can give you what you are looking for - knowledge of particular camera shops in Tenerife.
I can, however, advise you not to buy anything on holiday. There will, as elven has said, be complications on returning item upon breaking. There will also be complications with warranties.

Do you think nobody here has ever been to Tenerife? - What if the question was "Any good photo shops in New York" - then we could all answer, even though we may never have been there!

I will express my views on comments left in this forum, the same way you can express yours!

I can't speak about Tenerife but if I were asked about lanzarote I could offer opinion.

    Perhaps you've never been abroad?

OP - sincurea does not know everyone in this forum so hang on in there and see if someone comes to your aid.

Sincurea is correct however is stating that the buyer must be aware

OK, I gotta say that I found sinecurea's first comment to be amusing. I agree, it is a difficult question for an Irish person to answer.. and sorry to the OP but I have to admit giggling a little when I read it, thinking to myself 'how is anyone going to be able to give a genuine reply to this'. So i wasnt surprised to see a humourous reply.

I understand not everyone will find it funny or appreciate it, but I think this week has shown that there are very different and varying sense of humour in this forum, and IMO as long as the comment is not abusive then we are all going to have to appreciate that some things are just supposed to be funny. Like rymus pointed out, do we really want this to become a place where we 'leave our senses of humour at the door'? I dont anyway

I dont think this comment was abusive.. ok it wasnt exactly constructive either but it was a kinda tough one to come up with a genuine answer for...

    I think anyway

Slumpd, I have been abroad, though I know nothing about the camera shops.
Slumpd, I take your point that somebody might be able to help.
Slumpd, I'm looking forward to being silenced.

Wouldn't want to speak for anyone else on this forum.

Perhaps we could have a Simple sticky at the top of the forum on where to buy cameras and equipement......oh hang on we do!

Maybe then we could come up with the best shops to buy from, online and real and group them into geographical locations. Ireland, broken into main cities, UK, Europe etc.

Rymus - if you weren't bored to death reading this thread, perhaps we can start a new sticky for this??

    ok
i'm not getting involved in any silliness (haven't time) :)
    so
    in answer to the OP
about 7/8 months ago i flicked onto a consumer watchdog/reality type tv programme on the discovery channel or whatever, they were doing an exposé on shops in the Canary Islands. i'm almost certain one scene was in Tenerife, anyway it featured a German interviewer with a small camera hidden in a bag. He tried to return a defective camera and was assaulted by this heavy who was employed by the shop owner to disuade un-happy customers. I've also read a warning someplace about fake Sandisk CF Cards being flogged in Canary Islands.
the programme outlined various dubious practices carried out by these con artists, and they interviewed scores of people who had complaints about cameras and other stuff like watches phones etc. the law wasn't very helpful either, i think they did something about the assault but the consumer law wasn't being upheld.
So my advice is be very cautious, probably don't drink the water either

Hahahaha, Genius! Ok so, OP, you can rely on advice based on something Fionn saw on the discovery channel about the Canary Islands nearly a year ago!!! With a German presenter no less!

    I'm wetting myself here.

Back to the topic... Keep in mind that even though they don't have VAT in the Canary Islands the camera shops there are overpriced.
Sometimes they have good deals, but they'll try to make you buy overpriced accesories.
Make sure you know what you are looking for and what's a good price for it. Don't forget to check warranty, shouldn't be a problem but better make sure..

I am actually just back from a holiday in Tenerife. None of the equipment is priced so you actually have to go and ask for prices. I found (after a bit of experimenting with people I met there) that you get quoted a different price depending on your accent. In my experience Irish accents are being quoted the highest prices!

Some of the shops advertise that they offer Europe wide warranties but I would suggest that you check out the validity of this before buying.

While you are there you should visit the Monkey Zoo (about a 10 minute drive from the airport). You actually get into the cages with some of the smailer monkies & can get some fantastic shots!

    Enjoy yout trip!

    Here are some practical tips:

    1. Be wary of any trader who offers you alcohol or refreshments in their shop.

    2. If you aren’t sure, leave the shop or say no. You can always return later once you have been able to check the offer.

    3. Be really certain about what you are buying and if you are looking for a brand name check you are getting the correct one.

    4. Be wary of the price - if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

    5. Be wary of lots of “freebies” being thrown in.

    6. Check all the packaging and that you can read the instruction manuals before you leave the shop.

    7. Ask the trader to wrap the camera in front of you rather then taking it into a back room

    8. Check the amount paid and currency conversions before leaving the shop.

    9. If possible have a friend or family member with you in the shop - although they won’t be impartial, it can help if things go wrong later.

10.Making a payment by credit card rather than cash or debit card can sometimes offer additional protection.

Fair enough so. Put on a silly accent and you'll be grand.
I'll try to start my silence now.

Know what you want! - ViSANTA Stores are perhaps the most honest or reputable. Its fun coasting into an electronics store and asking if they have any good cameras or camcorders and letting them think that you dont really know anything .... I got spun reams of crap about the Canon 350D and then I said that I was a photographer the guy immediately said that he might have got his facts mixed up and disappeared ...

There are loads of people stung every day - JVC or JVC DX anyone?

TBH I wouldn't touch anything electronics wise in the Canaries. Most (if not all) of the shops in the tourist areas are run by cowboys. Maybe if you find somewhere where the locals go to buy their gear then you might get an honest dealer.

A few years back when I was young and foolish I bought a Samsung camcorder in Gran Canaria. Its still working grand (as a webcam at the moment) but the guy in the shop had his little scam where he charges you a stupid amount of momey for a cassette to stick into the camera so you can look at it.

It's not a nice experience dealing with these sleazy *insert expletive here* so don't ruin your holiday by trying to get a good deal out of them, because you won't.

The only place I'd recommend is Visanta, they're more expensive than the cowboys for a reason. I wanted to buy the Sigma 10-20mm lens for my 20D but they didn't have it in stock. Prices are good there, that lens was priced at €389 there but Sigma Ireland might give out stink if you have problems with the lens.

I eventually bought in Cork, as it was close the online price in mainland Europe!

I think Sinecurea is just pissed off because he/she doesn't have any idea about buying equipment abroad and so decided to belittle the thread instead. Maybe he/she should visit the Portable Media Players forum, there is often threads on there about buying iPods etc in America, he/she could have hours of fun!!

OP: Having been to Tenerife myself (oh look, there's someone that's able to help! ) I can tell you the camera shops over there are pretty dodgy, my brother bought a camcorder in one of them which didn't work and when he returned with it the next night they shop assistant claimed there was no return policy (the opposite of what he said when my brother was buying the camcorder). Any argument my brother tried to make with him was met by "I no understand".

And yes, it is true that you will be quoted different prices depending on where you are from. Same goes for Turkey and Greece.

Thanks for the advice, all appreciated and helpful. Will stick to window shopping and hopefully can get a good deal on a camera bag and maybe some accessories, should be fun.

Thanks to anyone that bothered to post constructive on-topic replies. Given the odd question I expected to get some messing but remember, messing causes accidents! Good luck with the shopping OP, tbh though I'd rather buy from the internet than any dodgy shop in Tenerife.

I can only imagine they'd be like the shops that line the pier boardwalk in San Francisco. No prices displayed and when you go in to enquire, they try to sell you the kitchen sink and almost wont let you leave until you show them the colour of your money. Caveat emptor!

If you do buy over there, come back and report on your findings. If nothing else, it'll serve to provide an account of experience that may be of use to future buyers.
