    Well Nintendo must be delighted.

Sony have screwed its european fans, and given Nintendo the chance to build a WII user base so big, it doesnt matter how good sony's console is when it arrives.

I suppose a lot of those who were hoping for a PS3 will just pick up the WII this christmas.

I think the Wii is only gonna be 250 quid.. whereas the PS3 will be a whopping 500 quid

My plan is I'm gonna get the Wii first and then when Sony put their price down, buy a playstation aswell :D

Microsoft and Nintendo will do well this Christmas.

    500 for the crappy 20Gig non-HDMI version....600 for the full-but-without-the-40-quid-HDMI-cable version.

I'll be able to get myself a Wii AND a new Sapphire Radeon X1900XT 512MB graphics card for more serious gaming for the same price!

Not really a decision I need to mull over there......

Holy crap, talk about handing the Christmas market to MS and Ninty on a plate.
However they have to get their finger out, they can't just expect their consoles to sell themselves, and if they don't sell the 360 and Wii to the masses then they will have only themselves to blame.
On a different note could be just the time to buy on a ton of PS3 consoles and flog them to the early adopters for a handsome profit, I mean if they were willing to spend €500/€600 they will certainly lack the common sense not to buy one for €800, no?

Well, if you can get hold of any.... that'll be tough.

They'll go for a lot more than €800 I think. I remember some 360s sold for that. Think of all the European Sony fanboys that have piles of money burning holes in their pockets and can't wait till March.

Lets just hope Nintendo don't pull something similar....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

    Indeed :(

Nintendo have never been great as far as Europe is concerned, let's hope the Wii does come out before Christmas. I can't wait.

Oh btw reactor, can you put your XBL tag bar under the other image? It's super wide right now :o

    what resolution is your monitor?

    *edit*

tbh under my sig makes it look a bit long, will change to smaller gamer tag

With the speed of production for Wii I would say there is no need to worry about missing a "holiday season" release. It may not be a worldwide date, but I don't think Europe will be too far off, fingers crossed.

Infact, Reactor, you're lucky not to have the SIGPO on your ass with 2 pics. Both of which are oversized (AFAICS).

Thanks for the heads up, wouldn't want the Signature Police "on my ass".

Indeedy, for that would be a bad thing. Resolution isn't the prob, I try to browse boards on a smaller window as not to alert co-workers I'm reading boards (which some don't consider working, pfff).

Nintendo would be mad to delay a European release at this point. With Sony and this move, releasing the Wii before Christmas would be very very very good for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

It would, but, tbh Nintendo have a long history of ignoring Europe.

They might even take the line that with Sony taking itself out of the European christmas market, they can afford to too.

I am hoping though, that because the technology in the Wii isn't as cutting edge (from a processor / gpu angle anyway) that production should be a lot easier and quicker. Then they will stick to their indications.

    September 15th, hopefully we'll know.

Good for Ninty certainly, but bad for us? The Wii might be harder to come by on release now as I can see alot of people who were going to get PS3 picking it up. Time to make the comitment and pre-order.

Was just thinking the same thing...
I'll definitely be placing my preorder as soon as I know the Euro release date

Anyone know if Smyths is taking pre-orders yet?
They're usually the cheapest for hardware launches.

Smyths in Limerick are taking pre-orders.

Smyths near Jervis street were taking pre orders last saturday week.

    30 quid deposit, i think.

This ps3 delay suits me fine. i was gonna wait till next year anyway.

Now, this is probably the wrong thread to ask this, but I'm gonna need a new telly for the Wii (at the moment i'm using a 14" portable - an unfortunate and temporary situation).

Anyone got any thoughts as to what i should go for?

Might be good to start a seperate thread, but the most important question is, what's your budget?

Why are people suddenly getting jumpy at the idea of a Wii delay to mirror the PS3 delay?
Is this some sort of whispering campaign to damage Nintendos rep?
Given that there is no evidence whatsoever that the Wii will be delayed here at all I find several posts to be daft in the extreme.
The Wii has had no reports of any problems in manufacture apart from a dodgy one about the fabrication of the controller.
All I wanted was a Wii anyway, no interest in the PS3, not til a price drop in 07, that won't happen til that Christmas now anyway, where o where will I play all those lovely next gen games, oh yeah, on my 360.

Considering the wii isn't hd ready, any tv will do :p But assuming you want a decent lcd flat screen, thats hd ready in case you buy skyhd/360/ps3 over the next year or two, There's plenty of nice screens on the market.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 163 ✭✭Darnell13

Well, I know an ordinary tv will do for the wii, so I have to decide whether to buy the biggest flat screen i can (Hopefully the budget will be pushing towards a grand) or try and get a HD ready tv for PS3 (which i won't be getting till next summer, probably).

I'm just thinking that a big screen would be important for using the wii mote.

I guess I'll just go and check out Power City/Dixons etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Aldi (I know, strange place) has an offer on atm for a 40" LCD, IIRC it's around 1400

Xtravision still have their offer on the 32" LCD - was 999 I think it's down to 950 now (that's what the poster said when I popped into Xtravision last). Very nice screen. Both are HD ready, have HDMI inputs (I can't personally vouch for the Aldi one though, haven't seen the connections or the screen in person).

Well if Wii face no immediate threat from PS3 in Europe, they may delay the European launch so that they can have more machines readily available for North America on launch day.

With this news Nintendo have been given a pretty good opportunity, and they have it all to lose. Although they're motto of "we just do brilliant games" is aimed at people who want multimedia suites from their consoles, i think it's a pretty good reflector of their business capabilities aswell. In the past they've mad some pretty poor marketing/logistical decisions and it took sony to hilight this. So where as some people might see this as great day for Nintendo, that they've been given Europe on a platter (to split with xbox), i'd be wary to see what moves they might make.

Having said that, they've come along way from the days of the N64, and their marketing department seems to be slowly catching up with the genius of their games designers - the GBA and DS both had pretty solid campaigns, the DS in particular.

I guess we'll have to wait till the 15th to see!

Sony don't need to worry. No matter what the machine, people will buy a Sony console. The PSP is a good example of this. Mabye a decent portable dvd player, but not many decent games since GTA.

However, this move could favour Nintendo. I thought it would fall to the PS3 come Christmas. Whatever about innovation, the Wii would be a console purchased after a higher power machine.

Still, I'm goin' for a Wii this winter. Oh dear...

The PS1 was so long ago now, 11 years now, a lot of early teens may never have had one of their own, starting instead in the era of PS2 and Xbox, a far more even fight than that between the PS/Saturn/N64.
I don't think they will be as disappointed to see a 360 under then tree than a PS3.
As I have said before, I reckon a lot of kids in fact see the PSP as the next step in Playstation enterainment, and as long as they have a current Sony games format they won't feel like they are missing out getting a 360, given that all their PS2 favourites are receiving facelifts and being ported over to the handheld.
Did most common gaming folk notice the power differential between the PS2 and Xbox? Outside of a handful of platform specific games they seemed pretty evenly matched, so won't the 360 be the same, and given the hands who ahve the purchasing power, the parents, they may well go for the cheaper option, given the massive difference in price.
The only way the PS3 has a hope of keeping consumer interest high and to dissuade parents from making the next-gen purchase this Christmas is to point out what it is about the PS3 that makes it so much better and essential in comparison to the 360, just like they successfully did with the PS2 versus the DC.
But I reckon it'll be harder this time because their simply isn't any compelling reason to buy a PS3 over a 360, aside from quoting sterile stats about polygon pushing power, and that is the last arguement of the truely desperate fan-boy!

Ya but there aren't enough fanboys to outsell the other consoles with a huge headstart and more affordable prices.

I can't see many people going "the PS3's not out yet, ah sure I'll get a Wii instead". If people were planning to fork out €600 for a console in the first place, I think they'll wait. Mabye Nintendo will get a head start in sales, but I wouldn't be too surprised if Sony catches up quickly.

The 20 something year olds with good jobs and money to burn will say that. However that is only a tiny fraction of the market. Despite Palystation giving the impression of having a more mature audience it's that children that make up by far the biggest market. When mammy and daddy walk into Game to get themselves a PS3 for little johnny and find that they can't get one until March then they aren't going to tell Johnny that Santa will be late this year and he won't be getting it until March. They are going to buy him the next best thing, a xbox 360 or a Wii since the absolute worst thing they can do is disappoint.

I think you may be right, they'd rather get him something that he hasn't asked for rather than just leave a gap and wait till they can get him the ps3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

That's what I was thinking too, all the people buying consoles for Christmas. It's a crazy time. Everything sells out then. If the parents can't buy their kid that PS3 for Christmas, what'll they get instead? A 360 or a Wii, and the Wii has the advantage of being cheaper, so they'll see it as a stopgap, buy a Wii now and keep the kiddies happy for Christmas and get them their PS3 later on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,111 ✭✭✭tba

Im sorry maybe Im missing something here, but Didn't nintendo themselves say that the Wii was not in direct competition with the 360 and the PS3? You may as well cite the delay of the PS3 as a great day for the fried chicken market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord
