i'm working off a fairly battered and bruised laptop which for the most part is serving me surprisingly well.. however, when using the internet it disconnects from the wireless network every 20mins or so and when connected is extremely slow..
i'm connected to bt broudband through a linksys router.. the wireless range should be fine as i've worked with other laptops at high speeds from the same location..
is there any way to increase the wireless signal using software? or is there another reason why it disconnects from the network every so often?

Could be just a bad/dying wireless card in the laptop ( could be built in ) , maybe try borrow a pcmcia one ,slot that in and see if its any better. Then same one as you tried , some of the wireless stuff for sale is total junk.

If the wlan card is pcmcia, most of the older ones have a little connection on the outside, where you can plug in an external antenna. You could pick up a desktop antenna on ebay for peanuts!
