Why we don't have more Motor Museums!

I was away in Mayo for a few days and decided to come home via Athlone so I could visit 'An Dun Transport & Heritage Museum' (near Ballyhowlin, Co. Westmeath).

It's a small museum with about 10 cars, two tractors, a fire tender jeep, threshing mill, farm implements, motoring memorabilia and an upstairs full of lots of interesting old items (radios, typwriters etc etc etc).

Anyway I got speaking to the owner of the museum and he told me that it costs him €3,700 per year to insure the premises AND on top of that the council charges him €1,700 per year in rates??!!!!!!

That a total of €5,400 per year before he even opens the door to the public!!!

He lamented about this cost and said he may not continue opening it which he said was a great shame as he loved to see kids (and adults) coming in and seeing all the old vehicles and items on display.

Here we have a prime example of somebody, in a quiet rural area, trying to help educate kids and attract a few tourists to the area and he is hit by this massive bill.

Although I don't know how his insurance could be reduced, at the very least museums should be exempt for paying council rates!!!

quite right. It's hard to say wehy there arent more motor museums. The hobby is massive now and many people have more than one car and would welcome somewhere to display a "spare"....

    5400 a year is over 100 a week...

the taxes seem crazy, i wonder what exactly he meant by "rates"? or what he pays the rates on? special museum rate??? seems a bit irish to tax a museum.

i wonder if improving security and or fire proofing of the building would decrease his insurance premium?

    I agree, €5,400 a year is crazy!!

"Rates" = Commercial Rates payable to county council by any owner of a business premises.

It is ridiculous that he has to pay rates, museums should be exempt as they are educational facilities!!
