Should channel 6 go on to Sky or would FTA make more sence,

As BBC & ITV Film4 are now fta, and with RTE under contract for ftv, then if channel 6 went fta,
    1. they would be the only Irish fta channel.
    2. they would also be recivable in England.

If they wanted to boost viewing figures you would think that fta would offer the most viewers.

    regards tomk.

RTE is not under contract for FTV (Free to View). They are offering themselves Free to Carry and getting free carriage for Sky on basis that Sky charge what ever they like.

On these Islands, only C4 and Five have FTV contracts with Sky, and only for U.K.

Channel 6 could never afford the extra cost of rights for covering the twenty times bigger UK market. Their costs for content are based on likely viewership which is limited to about 300,000 households (UPC Network). FTA is nearly 60Million viewers.

Technically Channel 6 are subscription only as there is no such thing as free cable. They are probably getting nothing from UPC as it is a low budget channel, but getting free carriage. UPC (ex NTL/Chorus) has to pay for BBC, UTV, C4, Five, Sky1 etc.
