Do I have mad photoshop skilz to pay the bilz?

Err...... No, definately not. I can get the idea so far, but then fall flat on my face.

The idea behind this one is that the book is supposed to be a window for the imagination. Yeah that sounds all suspiciously artsy , but anyway. I want the book to look like a frame around the outside, but still have the text partly visible across the ship. I don't think i've achieved that.

This one is a similar, older idea, but again problematical. It's the blood stain that I can't get right, I think i'll have to get out the ketchup......

Yeah, this is just a rip-off of the Guiness advert - only worse!

Book one is my fav, think that really works! Any tips then? How does the wizardry work

I really like where you're going with those first two. Something's not quite right with the lighting and contrast on the first one, but you're definitely not far off. Maybe a tighter crop on the book pages, have the writing slightly more visible, and less blue for the sky of the picture...?

I really like the second though, the white writing on black jumps off the screen. I think with the blood you're probably looking for a deeper red (maybe less transparent on that bit) and possibly a bit of a reflection/shading to make it less flat. Very inspirational stuff. Looks like loads of fun :)

I definitely don't understand that funny game with the bats though - is it like quidditch? I'm with Father Dougal on that one... ;)

maybe use the warp tool on the first (CS2 only) to make the images fit the curvature of the page better. If you don't have CS2 check out displacement mapping as an alternative method.

No. 2 is nice but needs a bit od messin to get colours right methinks...

No. 3 is almost there. Levels correction etc of the guy in the background to fade him out, plus I'm too not sure of the scale. You clould try some more shadows under them too.

    Some nice ideas.

I love to see experimenting. :) The ideas are good, I like the second one best.

I love the first two, and got what you were at straight away with the book idea. Great stuff!
Is the last one the mighty hurlers of Waterford walking all over Kilkenny by any chance??

On the first image, Book 1, do people think I should just have a single ship visible? Does having the two of them confuse it a bit? Or should I have more in there - I could put in a shot of a ships deck or a mast or summat, i've got plenty of them after the Tall Ships race last year.
    :)

You've hit the nail on the head there. It is way too flat and two-dimensional.

Yup now you mention it, the scale of the second quidditch player looks a little off. I had one really poor attempt at trying some shading, if you notice the silly little smudge under the first players foot.....

Thanks for the help, i'll keep working on them and post up the new versions.

the plastic wrap filter wheh blended correctly can be useful for giving something a 3D feel like your blood in no. 2.

Maybe in no. 1 if the ships were an "out of bounds" illistration on the page with text on the other side...
Something like a sketch fading into the real thing as it jumps from the page.

Now this is the sort of fun we could have learning PS if we got a PS subforum!!!

That third one is really dodgy.....but the other two are great!

If the leg of the of foremost player needs to be solidified, and the player in the background needs to be faded & shrunk. I'd love to see some godzilla style house crushing going here also:)

The ships in the first one need to be brought out more..less faded , keep em both though, maybe a resize so both are roughly the same size?

I hope you don't mind but I had a go at a version of your book idea.

The masking is pretty tatty as is the fade from the sketch to real ship but you get the idea.

That "Out of Bounds" idea could be just the trick i'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestions and examples.

I agree the Hurlers shot needs a lot of work, i've been having trouble trying to get a fog effect to match the mist around the landscape. But more then that I want to change the whole background, i'd like to put a shot of the Comeraghs or Knockmealdowns in instead. I just don't have a suitable shot at the moment.

    Sounds sweet,
a good way to get fog is to apply the clouds filter (with defaut colour palet - press D) to a blank layer and change the blend mode to screen, blur mask and fade to what you need.
I also say a good tip on last weeks photoshop TV for adding steam to a coffee cup, I'll see if I can dig it up, might be useful. Actually that was a really funny episode...

EDIT: That steam tip thing was in episode 43.
