Temp Traffic lights

It seems that temporary traffic lights seem to pop up around every corner these days because some builder is crossing the road with a digger or something.

What I want to know is if they have to get permission from the gardai or Council to do this.

If they don't, does it mean that any Joe Soap can hire out a set of traffic lights (€150 per week) and set them up where and when they want.

Yes. If I didn't need to get planning permission, you can be sure that I'd have my new Duplex built on O'Connell St in less than 2 months.

I'm not sure but I think you'll find that those guys are working for the local council and so have permission to use the lights.

The only times ive seen temporary traffic lights was when they were actually needed... botched roads and the like. The only 'bad' thing about them is sometimes they favour one direction *shakes fist*.

Permission has to be got from the council for any work done on a public road. As part of the permission granted it is stipulated that some form of traffic control is used if traffic flow in either direction is impeded. Most contractors will opt for lights as it's usually cheaper than paying 2 men to stand at each end with stop/go signs. They are also needed to keep the contractors insurance company happy.

When I got to the other side the guys had taken away the matching set of lights... Feckers. I bet they had a right laugh at that..
