Hi all, just like to relate a tale about my friend.

I built him a Windows machine about 3 months back, decent rig for light gaming -- 7600GT, decent OCZ RAM, what have you.
So all was going fine, it happily played Flight Sim or whatever -- until he got on the net.
Blammo! Immediate attack of spyware & trojans; they embedded himself in his harddrive, gave him pop-ups. Since I wasn't available, the only thing I could do was offer him tips over the phone (tip for all: DON'T GIVE TIPS TO N00BS OVER THE PHONE!!) & hope he'd learn how to deal with it.
After the pop-ups started getting less annoying & more worrisome (think pop-ups to pedophile sites  ), he decided it was time to make sure he could not be "traced" (for a crime he did not commit -- but he wouldn't have known that)
Yep -- he turned off the PC, removed the HDD AND the RAM, and smashed them into tiny little pieces! Yep, he's never gonna be "traced" for having bad pop-ups on his PC now...

So, now I have a PC to re-build, and a funny story to relate.
And the lesson of the story is: should've bought a Mac :D

Well thats one way to get rid of any evidence, no need for Window Washer or anything. :)

it would have cost much less to just reboot the whole lot, however all Windows give you now are the restart discs, which are absolutly no good. have fun anyway

Well he is probably safe now.. You should really tell him about the radioactive half life of a broken HD is 2000 years never mind the ram and there are serious enviromental concerns :)

Point out to him his porn is unrecoverable. Watching grown men cry is funny.

What about the cookies? Did someone tell him about the cookies!

Tell him to get all of the cookies and any sort of biscuits in his house and destroy them asap. Destroy them by fire, as they are still edible (recoverable) if soaked in liquids. To be safe id remove all crackers too.
