    Howdy

My stand alone cd player gave up on me and I was thinking of replacing it with something like this

    http://www.yamaha-uk.com/hifi_components/?product_id=111

I would prefer one that has the ability to connect to the net wirelessly to update tag information, etc. Anyone around bought anything like this. Advice would be greatly apprecitated.

    Thanks in advance

That Yamaha is a really nice unit , but I'll just point out that it doesnt rip to mp3 format ,
Note it just copys the CDS as they are , in 16 bit stereo , there is no compression at all , thats what makes the unit so good in terms of music quality. There is no lossy compression.

Its also how only 400 CD's fit on a 250 gig hard drive , in mp3 format that would be about 4000 as opposed to 400.

This being the case , there are no tags to edit , the format does not allow for tagging of songs , your can name them through an RS232 interface , but thats not the same as tagging in mp3 terms.

This is an excellent unit , no doubt about it , but has nothing really to do with mp3 .

Cheers mate for the reply, hadn't seen that it didn't store in mp3. I have trawled the websites looking for a device, the closest I've come to is this one from Acoustic Solutions. Good price at 300 euro but the only way to update tag info is via a cd they send out monthly.

I would have imagined there was a market for this sort of thing, but god knows I've been wrong before. Thanks again for the reply.

I'd wager there is something out there alright but I don't know of any offhand myself.

Google turned up the Philips WACS700/05 which has an inbuilt 40GB HD and an internal copy of the gracenote CD database so when it rips to MP3's it can apply the tag info even if no internet connection is present - though the database can be updated by supplying it with a net connection.

Seems just like the sort of thing you want but the price is hefty.

Another solution is something like the Squeezebox which can pipe the music via wireless connection to anywhere you have one of these units. It supports and displays the tag information but the catch is you need a computer to hold the songs & rip them of course.

But it does support a wide variety of codecs so you could get great quality out of it.

    +1 for slimserver\squeezebox

You could build your own using squeezebox/slimserver. It supports FLAC which is as lossless as you can get.

If you are happy enough with MP3 you would also use ejukebox.

Was looking at that philips unit, the price is hefty. The 40 gig drive is a bit small aswell.

Would prefer just a standalone box with no messing around. I'd spend more time tinkering and upgrading, etc, than I would actually just playing music. That acoustics solution one would be perfect if it had some form network connection.
