Im currently driving a 1.3 Diesel Astra (06) and am looking to change cars. The reason Im looking to change is that the Astra is just too heavy for a 1.3 engine. It's too sluggish.
Im looking at changing to the Toyota Corolla but would like some feedback before I look too much into it.

i'm driving a 2.0 astra diesel and it goes like a rocket! big road tax though. Drove a new 307 1.4 hdi the other day. Great mileage out of it and loads of extras including climate control, auto wipers/lights and woody finish...

The Astra is also available in 1.7 diesel though it only has 10bhp more than the 1.3 version. It most likely has more torque though.

To answer your question. I had a Corolla 1.4 D4-D for a day some time ago while my own car was being serviced. Found it to be ok, it won't set the world on fire but it didn't feel slugish in any particular way. Take one for a test drive and compare.

BTW I think myself it's a bit late in the year to be buying a new car. In 4 months time it will already be classed as a year old. You will loose alot of money on your Astra too since it is so new. I know you cannot avoid depreciation but I like to get most of the year's worth of use from the car before taking the hit.

PS. There is an all new Corolla on sale in early 2007. I would wait for this as Toyota are changing the name of the car afaik, this will impact resale values of the current model especially run out models.

The 307 you drove was probably 1.6 HDI. The 1.4 HDI is even slower than your Astra.
