    Hi all
I was just wondering is there a way of setting the dvd region on my laptop as i want it to always play in dvd region 2.Is there some way of doing this in the registry? I am afraid that after so many chances it will be stuck in region 1 as i am playing some american dvd's.

    Cheers:confused:

    download DVDregionfree
it stops all applications checking the region of the player and never requires changing

I believe that VLC media player ignores the region setting on your drive so you never need to change the region setting, similar to the previous post but another option.

    Edit: VLC is free.

Yes but you don't have to make life hard for yourself.

There are actually two locations where the region is set. The hardware (the physical drive) has its own setting. Windows also has one. The Windows setting can effectively be changed an unlimited number of times as when it locks to a region after the fifth change, re-installing Windows will set it back to zero. This can be set in Control Panel (probably System, Hardware, double-click on the optical drive though it depends on which version of Windows you're using)

Unfortunately the hardware will lock after five times and when it does that there's effectively no way back.

I'd run with one of the suggestions from one of the guys who posted before me. I haven't used VLC but I've used DVDRegionFree and found it entirely satisfactory at doing what JoeySully said it does.

VLC should work as it skips the region on the DVD ROM. There might be firmware available for your type of DVD ROM to make it region free, however make sure it has been tested first.

I feel like I should be on the Geneal Ignorance round on QI for asking this question, but if you can set the Hardware to Region 0 aren't you sorted ?

Not quite as no geographical region is set to 0, so no matter what country you pick it will be a region from 1-6. The wiki entry goes into more detail on this.

If you don't want to mess with a software solution there are many modified firmwares for various brand PC DVD drives that make them region free check out The Dangerous Brothers website. Basically all these do is make the numbers of times you can change the region code to be unlimited.

AnyDVD which is a commerical program also does this on the fly so no need to do anything just put the disc in and play (same sort of thing like the DVDRegionFree program).

Region 0 is universal so if you set your drive to that it can only play universal encoded DVDs.
