    ahhhh,

    ive broke one of media centre pc's.
    whatever i did it wont playback and mpeg-1 audio.
    mp3s, vcd, xvid with mp3 audio etc etc,
    all of them just return the "unsupported format" error.

    if i close mce and try to play in wmp10 i get "error downloading codec"
    i can play the files in videolan / winamp etc

    ive tried installing ffdshow which directfilter mp3 support.
    ive installed wmp11 to try to fix the issue.

    anyone got any info on how to reset wmce without reformatting.

    I had this happen to me a while back with WMP on an XP Pro box it just would not open a certain file type. I had to use system restore to get it back in working order, so that is what I would try first if you can.

    From here is something that you could try but haven't tested it myself;
    Q: What does it mean if I get the error - "The audio codec identified by the format tag 55 is required to play this file."?
    A: That means that your MP3 decoder has been broken by something that you've done to your system. The easiest way to fix this should be to find the file l3codeca.acm on your system, rename that file to l3codeca.bak, then go to WMP's Help:Check for Updates and run that so WMP can replace the l3codeca.acm MP3 decoder WMP uses.

    It doesn't sound like a codec issue though more like the parser in WMP is broken, the parser is what splits the audio and video from the container & then hands to the video/audio decoders for playback.

    There is also a "nuke from orbit" option will will remove all third party filters and restore the default set by re-installing WMP after removing those registry keys.

    Another thing to try is re-installing the Microsoft codec package.

    Lastly there is the Directshow filter manager, if you wanted to compare against someone else's installed filters to see what if anything is missing from the Microsoft section.

    you were right about the codec issue.
    various fiddling around it still doesnt work.

    various fiddling more and nothing works :/
    no system restore so its out with the xp disc for me...

    Before formatting try this,

    Download graphedit and run it, select render a media file then point it to a .mp3 file and it will display what filters are used to decode that file.

    See how your stacks up to mine in particular the splitter;
