Hi guys i got a lense second hand and i am looking for some opinions on this photo as i think the lense might might be very soft as regards picture quality. It is a canon 28-135mm with image stabiliser. This pic was taken with it on a canon 30d.
I am not an expert and your thoughts are appreciated.
    Cheers
    Steven

My guess would be not that the lens was soft but the there is a lot of noise what did you have the ISO set to?

    Strange.

Not there's something iso 640 with a frowney face

Try a diffrent shot this time with ISO 100 and natural light the we shall see.

Good advice above. Also, if possible, try to have something in focus from a corner to the center so that you can tell if it soft in the corners only or all around. Looking at the MTF charts, it seems like it could be pretty soft wide open at a short focal length (post those w/ your next image, too). Is this your lens? http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=7337

I have this same lens too and it is always a little soft when wide open. In fact I think the IS is partly to blame - it helps you to take blur-free shots well enough, but at the expense of image sharpness. Most days I tend to leave it turned off.

The softness has never really bothered me as Canon dSLR images perk up nicely when you use a little Unsharp Mask on them. I have the older 10d.

Ive got this lens with a 20D and in my opinion , its the image stabilisation thats at fault , the lens is much sharper with the stabilisation turned off , I have yet to see a lens where IS was anything but a detractor in terms of image quality , theres just no substitute for a tripod or monopod.

Maybe some of the more expensive lenses have better IS , I dont know but on this one it definitely takes away from the sharpness.

Having said that , this lens is my favourite and I use it more than anything else , I just never use the IS is all.

Thanks or the feedback guys i thought i was going mad
I paid 150 euro for it do u think that was a fair price??

€150 - is that all? Brand new those lenses are €400+ from online retailers and are popular even at that.

I wouldn't be complaining over a little softness if I got the lens for that price.
    :D
