Why do you want to do Karate?? Just go and give a club a try! If you don't like it after a few classes then go to another one! Then another one!! But give it a chance first!!

A quick Google and here's a Karate club in Athlone:
    http://www.matsubayashibeaumontha.com/

    and found these lads...
    Name: Athlone Karate Club,
    Contact: Brian Feeney, 087-74 41 718
    Venue: Pairc Chiaran, Ballymahon Rd,
    Athlone, Co. Westmeath
    Training Times: Juniors: Sat 11-12pm
    Seniors: Mon & Wed 7.45 – 9.30 Sat 12-1pm

What other types of MA are you interested in, and what do you want out of your training??

Hey there. Theres this Karate place in Athlone http://www.matsubayashibeaumontha.com/Website/dojo,html.html

However, one of my friends from Kenpo who moved to Athlone went to this dojo and said that they dont do any sparring of any kind and that it was all just theoretical training. Wasnt his cup of tea, and not mine either. But by all means, go down and train for a few class and decide for yourself.

    and some other styles:

    Bujinkan - http://www.bujinkanlillisdojo.com/

Theres also a Tae Kwon Do school somewhere there but their website seems to be down.

    Good Luck.

    Dave.

thanks for the help. i might try the karate dojo but im not sure about it. seems that the lack of sparring may effect the overall use of it. i want to be able to learn from it, like if anyone was ever to fight me or if i was in the position with no other option that i could end it as quickly and easily as possible. i want to be able to react with the martial art and not to have it only usable in drills in class's.im intrested in many other martial arts like muay thai, jeet kune do, kung fu and alot more theory. iv so far only read guides but i dont think they would help at all as i would need to put them in to practice to know when to use what

Why are you so sure that they don't spar??

    Have you been there?

    You could try TKD? http://www.rita-itf.org/athlone.htm

Do you have any MA experience at all??

There are loads of MAs out there, and even if you were to choose one, the quality of training offered by different instructors varies hugely.

The best thing that you can do is to take a few classes in different clubs and get a feel for the instructor, the club and the people who train there.

I've trained with the same TKD instructor for the last 5 years, but even in that period of time, I've tried other arts where I've walked away from the club after 2-3 classes, simply because of the instructors inability to teach.
