Looks quite good. The trailer is really going for the "quirky, American indie film" feel (which isn't a bad thing at all). Plus, it's got Steve Carrell in it so it can't be all bad:D

Haven't bothered finding out what it's about yet I'm probably gonna see it as I'm a fan of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

Saw the preview today in the IFI. Really found it quite enjoyable. Steve Carrell is so different (at least from my mind). Quite liked him in this roll. It's sort of straight faced, normal guy humour/sarcasm. There were laughs, plenty of them. There was hiding (cringish - in the embarassing sorta way). Did I mention the laughs? There was some seriously funny stuff in there. Screen 1 in the IFI was pretty full and it seemed to be enjoyed by all.

    FILM OF 2006!

I will give you 2 simple reasons why this is the best film I have seen in the last 2 years.

    1. If I go to a film with high expectations of it being a good film (not good entertainment, or good action, or a good laugh) I mean a GOOD FILM everything about it is good. I have been about 99% time slightly a tiny bit (or more) disapointed with the result, the last film I went to with these sort of expectations and got what I expected was OLDBOY that was 2 years ago.

Little Miss Sunshine (as you can see from this thread) delivered what I was expecting and MORE MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE.

    2. I have not slept in 34 hours, if the film was anything but pure brilliance I would have nodded off at some point, This film had me hooked from beginning to end, I refused my bladder's demand for relief for the last 30 minutes BECAUSE I WAS SO HOOKED, not even A scanner darkly (which I loved) could do that.

This is the sort of film where I must F*cking swear when I go to give my verdict because it needs that extra f*cking hyperbole venom secreted out onto the reader so they can F*CKING FEEL WHO F*CKING SEXUALLY AMAZING THIS F*CKING FILM IS!

I dont care what else comes out this year. THIS IS MY FILM OF THE YEAR! I F*CKING CLAIM IT AS OSCAR WINNER!

-Its a brilliant mixture of american indie characterisation with Hollywood family comedy, its got the balance perfect, delivering the morals we expect in true movie making fashion (not shoving it down a throat by spelling it out.) A joke can get more emotion and honesty across in this film then all the melodramatic garbage.

-The acting is spot on. Steve Carrell, who I have seen mostly in over the top comedy (which he is brilliant in) is actually bloody amazing in this, he gives this unfocused stare which is absolutly perfect for his character. The daughter puts dakota fanning to shame, Alana Arkin is fantastic...EVERYONE IS FANTASTIC I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS FILM.

The only criticism I can come up with isnt even a bloody criticism, I thought for one moment that all the wierd stuff that has happened to them in the film was too much that maybe the film had gone too far, but suddenly the next 30 minutes it scaled back on the wierdness and the film nocked up the character development a notch and I didnt feel that doubt anymore.

This is a must buy for me, and I cant recommand it enough to anyone.

Absolutely dying to see this film...

... not out in Sligo unfortunately!

I never liked Greg Kinear and only "sorta" liked Steve Carell so when I saw the poster for the first time 2 weeks ago I was thinking, "Oh, this looks good. Too bad those guys are in it though."

But I must say that, after Little Miss Sunshine, my opinions have changed. I loved them both in this film and loved the film that little bit more because of it.

This is probably my second favourite cinema release this year, tied with V For Vendetta and beaten by Brick. I hear great things about Pan's Labyrinth so if that comes out in Q4 then maybe all the other films will have to move down one more place.

Saw it this evening and really enjoyed it.

It's always great to be reminded of how brilliant Alan Arkin is... why isn't he in more films?

Ha... yes.. I know it was a good film and all.. but he didn't really die and end up in the back of a camper van. It's called acting.

Funniest film Ive seen in ages. Reminds me of Grand Theft Parsons, but better. Feel good as well. Makes me feel all gooey inside... actually, maybe that's pneumonia.

    Brilliant brilliant brilliant! :D
Acting is simply supurb in this film, and the connection you make with the characters is very strong.
Some really good laugh out loud moments, with some very moving and touching ones.
A DVD I can't wait to buy and watch again.
    High recommended!

Fantastic film just saw it there. Every actor was superb in their role , Some great funny moments in it and some poignant moments too. Stand out for me was Kinnear who mastered his role to perfection

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Gustavo.. it's in Sligo?! Checked last week and it wasn't in their showtimes..

.. just checked there and it IS! I'm there this week.. might go on Tuesday after my theory test.

PS - oh and did anyone enjoy the soundtrack? Been listening to a lot of a band called DeVotchKa whose music apparently feature heavily in the film and it's soundtrack?

Click the link above to get to their MySpace.. and give a listen to 'How It Ends' - brillant!

Absolutely loved this film. Really really really really good.

really enjoyed this as well.. the writing is excellent and the family although slightly abnormal has all the characteristics of the modern day household..toni collette is superb as always and steve carrell is proving to be a real star..the grandfather role was obvious but that doesn't detract from it.still think the best grandparent role in cinematic history was in national lampoons vacation "the dog sh*t in the sandwiches!" and the kid from signs is excellent..the final scene setup and completion is just pure joy..really worthwhile after all the cr*p we have had to put up with this summer in the cinema..

Well.. lived up to my promises and went to see it tonight.

Absolutely amazing.. now my favourite film of the year... completely lived up to the hype. Felt so connected to the family - full of hilarious dialogue, excellent soundtrack, truly fantastic performances and extremely heartfelt moments.

Please anyone who's reading this - stay away from your 'John Tucker Must Die's and your 'You Me And Dupree's and go see this - you'll remember it long after you leave.

    I'd give it a 12 / 10... it's that good! :D

PS - Alan Arkin was phenomenal!
    PPS - The
    Super-Freak scene
will live with me til i get the DVD to re-watch.

Was waiting months to see this film and i knew it wouldn't let me down.
Best film of the year with out a doubt, such a relief to see something so originaly funny, dark, witty, good acting, good everything, it does not let down at any point. :D:D:D

Dance scene reminded me of Nepoleon Dynamite, brilliant.....downloaded song as well, cant stop singing it....

Pitty we will probably be subjected to the usual tripe for the rest of the year though .....
