Was playing around with my 350 and the Nifty Fifty (50mm 1.8) last night. Its a hard lens to get right expecially when my kid always seems to travel at 500 mph.

No post processing done. Just converted from raw to jpeg. 1/500th, F2.2, ISO 400. No flash. AI Servo.

Great eye colour and good use of the shallow depth of field.

thanks. The Gene gods were very generous on the eye colouring!!! I find the 50mm difficult to use at anything wider than F2. DOF is just too shallow unless the subject is totally still.

I really like the subtle colouring, and the yellow top balances up with those gorgeous blue eyes. It's a nice close crop, too. Cracking stuff.

There is no real difference between F2 and F1.8. Not like between F2 and F1.4.

It was actually 2.8 which is a full stop - I had put in a little EC.

I use a 350D and a 50mm F1.8 too and I set the automatic focusing to use one focus point and I find this helps. In the case of your photo I would try to set the focus on the nearest eye to me and vary the aperture a little between shots to get the desired effect.

Lovely portrait of a very photogenic child. You have caught a really wonderful expression on his face there.I'd crop it even more, but thats just a personal taste thingy.

Eyes are stunning, nice capture but I think he's creepy!

thanks for the comments. I'll spend some time on it later in PS and will probably crop a little closer. Comes out good in B&W with a little sepia but I hate to lose the colour of the eyes!
