XP infinite loops

This used to be a major problem but now I only see it rarely, today being an example.
Got a call from someone saying they got a new XP upgrade CD and could I load it on. Examined the hardware and noticed the graphics card was an S3 Savage4 which immediately rang alarm bells. I continued cautiously to install a clean copy of XP, when the installation completed I tried to play a DVD... within about 15 seconds the system froze, dropped to 16 colours and told me the graphics driver s3sav4m.sys stopped responding (at least SP2 doesn't BSOD like in earlier versions). So I had to take the machine away and replace the graphics card with something more compatible.
In the early days I was convinced it was a bug in XP itself since some machines that did suffer from infinite loop errors worked fine in Windows 98. But a lot of the problems I've noticed were with Savage4 cards, probably because S3 never made XP drivers for them. I also had some grief with NVidia cards and VIA chipsets but newer NVidia drivers seemed to sort it out in time.

I suppose I'm just wondering if anyone still comes across this much?
