    Lads,

Has anyone any experience of these sticks?

    http://www.durattan.com/

They look ok to me, but I'm not really a stick guy! Are these ok to train with or even spar/flow drill with? What is recommended material for sticks?

I have some white Wax Wood Staff and Cane, some allegedly "indestructible" fibreglass wraps, an Ally BBall Bat, just wondered where these would fit in terms of toughness and training utility. I'm going to put up a post and car tyre set up to drill the angles, what else can I do to improve on my own?

The sticks I ordered are 1" by 31" and black, may be a delay with backorders but I'll let ye know what they are like when I receive them.

Let us know how you get on.

I've seen some similar sticks, a guy in the uk makes them from the same type of nylon that water pipes are made from.

    They are tough!

    Keep us posted

    Musashi,
Depending on what yer planning to use them for, training sticks can be of a number of materials. For the majority of FMA, rattan is the preferred material, it's a vine and as such it doesn't splinter when subjected to heavy impact so no danger of sharp bits making contact. It varies in density from very light and whippy to really heavy and solid. It's a personal choice as to which is best but most readily available sticks are somewhere in the middle. A lot of "battle sticks" are made from hard wood such as hickory or exotic hard woods like ebony. These are great for solo drilling & conditioning work but are a bit dodgey when it comes to partner work or sparring.
I have had a bash with a lot of man made materials but always come back to rattan. I hope this helps, just curious but what kind of sparring / flow drills are you into?

Not really up to speed on stick work at all!

I was watching TV (Adventure One?) and a Canadian lady was training in Thailand in Krabi Krabong. One drill they had was the cut angles marked on a car tyre fixed to a post, and a guy with two sticks whomping on that tyre :) Looked fun and a good grip/wrist workout? Just thought I'd try something similar, but I'd prefer not to be breaking Rattan sticks off of the tyres.

Any advice on useful drills gratefully received man! :D

    John,

Hang around the boards long enough and you'll realise that Musashi just likes stuff. Especially stuff that can hit other stuff, stab, shoot or maim other stuff...

You say that like it's a bad thing Barry;) Personally I like to hit stuff, it appeals to the repressed caveman in me:D
    Musashi,
if you gonna hit tyres with sticks be careful cos it can really f*ck up your joints. Start slow with light weapons and build up gradually. Most FMA systems will have favoured basic striking combos, we call em Amara but as "consistent terminology is prohibited in the FMA" others systems call them something else. These along with the basic numbering sequences give you a heap of stuff to bash the rubber with.

Ain't that the truth brother, mind ya, some lads hitting ya ***EVEN IN ARMOUR***, leave some nice reminders, isn't that right John:D

If ya get decent rattan Mush, its the best and will last for ages unless of course you're either Scuttery1..... or mind ya Bosco Hogan!!!!:D

I've seen knife drills using the same angles, and I guess the Krabi lads were using sticks as stand ins for swords. I might get some lengths of bogger pipe to play with as well. I guess pine brush handles would snap into nasty impaling spikybits!

I've seen a couple things where a stick is used instead of an arm for rear naked choke, or that fang choke looks nasty! JUst something to be messing with at the moment, I'd like to add more weapon work to what I do.

    Musashi just likes stuff.
    And that's the truth!

I've seen guys passionate about collecting all sorts of esoteric stuff, I reckon cutty, shooty and bashy stuff is only medium strange.

Now about this rubber bashing in Armor business?....................

if youre gonna use sticks for KK get a rattan staff and cut it down, most rattan over here is around 26-28 inches which is a bit on the short side, 30-31 is way better but 36-ish inch sticks is around the length krabi krabong types use.

And did anyone mention to go easy on those tyres?:) tyre elbow is tennis elbows evil older brother . The tyres of go karts are pretty forgiving but they cave in easier than car tyres

Yep, as soon as I started Escrima I got tennis elbow and I was told that it was from holding my stick too tightly. Now I hold it between the thumb and forefinger as instructed and only close on impact and the problem has disappeared. :)

As refreshing as honesty is Mick, share don't scare.:p
Tyre elbow has a little sh8te of a sister called blisters, a dose of those will ensure yer grip ain't too tight:D
Don't ya just love how FMA posts always nose dive into the gutter?

This stick fighting thing already has the freudian feel about it lads, but you guys are pushing it too far:D

If you're at the next training meet, just remind me and I'll show you some of the Sayoc Stickgrappling stuff which is very sweet! Both of my elbows are frigged from years of hitting tyres, but Ush's karting tyres is a good one and there is that sweet satisifaction in caving them in:D

Now Barry, is it a case of our sticks been longer and harder than yours:eek:
