You know when your posting messages in boards similar to this, and you can click to find out the persons IP address, is there a way to find out where that person is ie will the IP address be able to tell someone this person is posting from such and such a place??

I believe so, alot of the time it will show what college or office building (people on boards) that people are located. If you mean on boards, I think only the admins have access to the IP addresses.

Other Boards give you access to the poster's IP address? Odd.

You can tracert (TRACErt RouTe) -> This will lead you to the general location -> depending on the origin of the poster, this may lead to something specific like a college or business, otherwise just their ISP (And exchange. i.e. Nearest ISP location to the poster...usually...mneh. )

Yeah i did think it was a bit odd too. I have a feeling the same person is logging in under a load of different user names, and stirring the sh*t. So if they are then it would just be the same IP address yeah??

Unless he's using different proxies for the different user names then yes, it should be the same IP for all names.

Yea more than likely. Unless they're smart enough to hide behind a proxy or something. Boards uses ip checks to see if a banned user returns under another username. People tend to connect from the same location each time. If you were to do an IP check on my posts they'd all be from one of two ips (home, work).

SO HOW DO I do the trace route thingy??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

open a command prompt and enter tracert www.google.ie or what every address/ip you want to trace.

TBH, best to read up on it via google.ie
Even when you do get it to work: you may not understand the output.

Home broadband connections usually don't have fixed IP addresses, i.e. if you lose your connection or just turn off your router you'll be given a different address.

Websites like www.dnsstuff.com will show who the IP address is believed to be registered by, but it'll generally show the ISP's office address, which would be Dublin for most of them here. And if you're under a proxy server (which may be situation in work/college), then anyone outside will only be seeing the proxy server's external address.

Doing a whois on an IP address will tell you who manages that IP block and who delegated it to them and what their AS number is.

There's usually enough information in that to get started :) However, that's just who manages the IP address - it could be anywhere on that company's network.

There's a good article here if you wanna get dirty: http://www.brassy.net/2006/jul/geo_location_theory_or_ip_to_country
