    Hi,

    Looking to build/upgrade my current PC and have begun the trawl through new tech to see what is best for me. From reading threads on here I see people generally ask what the system is going to be used for so:
    Main use will be web development, with things like photoshop, visual studio and dreamweaver open at the same time regularly. I also intend to occasionally game and want to be able to play the latest games but not with all bells and whistles turned on, frame rate is more important than high level bump mapping etc.

    Current system is an Athlon 2200, 1 gig DDR 2700 RAM and a Radeon AIW 9700 (128 meg AGP).

    Dunno much about the new core duo and core 2 duo stuff, but am I better going with one of these systems (seems like a 1.8 Ghz is within my price range for a core duo) over, say, a cheaper Athlon 64 3800?

    My budget is about 500 euros and with this I’ll need to get a CPU, Motherboard, RAM and a new video card. Not too bothered getting 2nd hard parts for some of this stuff if needs be.

    So, here are my questions:

    1) Is that budget realistic?
    2) I recently bought a 250 gig IDE drive, can I use this with my new system or should I get a new SATA drive, will I notice the difference?
    3) What would people recommend as a graphics card? A 6600 GT? (saw them cheap, 70 quid, in PC World)
    4) My PSU is 350W…should I up this, I have a DVD rom and burner on my current set up with this PSU.

    Can’t think of any more details. Any helpful responses are appreciated.

    Thanks.

    You should be able to get something decent enough for that money here are some suggestions;

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6300

    Motherboard with integrated audio/network/IDE/SATA support. So you can re-use your IDE hard drive, no need to get a SATA one.

    1GB DDR2-667 RAM

    GeForce 7600GS

    Total price: €480

    Not a bad little system at all for that, your existing PSU should power that without any problems, the Core 2 Duo E6300 is a dual core chip so that will come in handy anyway and it tends to be on par with the X2 4200+ so I would say it is a definite buy over the 3800+ model.
