I really like them. The conversion and composition works very well. I like the difference, one dark and one light. One small point. I would put subtle highlights in the eyes in the first one. It will really jump out at you then.

You would never guess that they were early attempts at B & W. So many times conversions are very falt and lacking in contrast. I like B & W to be just that B & W :D

    Looking forward to seeing more.

    I love close up portraits

really like the first one, nice and gritty.

I really like the composition on the 1st one, 2nd maybe a bit too tight?

I like the expression and catch lights in the 2nd one.

Is the 2nd one a bit flat looking because the strong flash? maybe intended?

nice shots tho - off to flick your Flickr

I'm not hugely into bw so I don't feel qualified to comment - but i did just want to say that I had a quick look through your flickr and you're very good at putting across a personality in a picture, and your sujects seem a lot more relaxed and natural in front of the camera than any I've ever tried. That, and having a good eye for the conversion to bw has you miles ahead of most beginners already.

I particularly like your tight framing on quite a few of them. Cool.

thanks for the comments, these are not from film taken with the 350D and converted in adobe raw. any other b&w's i did were just greys so i was happy enough with the way these turned out.

I must have a go at highlighting the eyes in the first one and see how it helps. I understand the issue with the crop and the brightness on the second one but i was looking to acieve something different. Personally i like to fill the frame as much as possible hence tight crops but using the 50mm prime is great for close up portrait shots.

As for people being relaxed, believe me it has taken a while for me to start photographing people because to be honest it is particularly annoying for them. Most of my friends have now been introduced to that experience and if you seen some of the expressions in other pics you would not say they were relaxed.

real B&W? do you mean film?
I really like the first one. In general close-up portraits are my favourites and I like this because it kinda breaks the rules in the sense that the eyes are out of focus.
The second one is pretty ordinary, although I'm sure she likes it !!

duh! I started the reply and got called away...

by real B&W i mean not just desaturated i.e. grayscale. Any i did before simply involved desaturate and i think you can see a big difference between the grays and the B&W's. Thats all i mean by real B&W, not grayscale

I think they are both good shots.I would have cropped the second one differently but that is merely a personal choice and based on what I can see of the shot right now.The B&W convesion is very good.Nice work.
