It's probaly a dumb question but how old do you have to be to be able to get classic insurance, im 19 and on a provisional do I have to wait until im 21 or 25?

And once the car is over 20 years old does it quailify for classic insurance regardless of engine size?

sorry if these questions seem a little dumb.

Vehicle must be 25 years old and it usually has to be a second vehicle to qualify for classic insurance. (Not sure about driver's age).

you can get a classic policy on a 20 year old car , but you probably won't get insurance unless your 25+. Cars over 30 are exempt from NCT and pay reduced tax of 42 euros per annum no matter what engine size.

You also need a full license and you have to be insured on another vehicle.

Not quite true. First Ireland will insure a classic car over 20 years old as an only car and as a proper NCB policy but with a mileage limit of 10,000 a year. Its a bit more expense than a classic second car policy. I think they are the only firm that can do this type of policy. Every other policy thats available is as a second car only.

But all the other conditions apply ie you must be at least 25 years old, full licence etc.

First Ireland: Yep, they are great with me. I have two classics insured, including one as my daily driver, limit of 10,000 miles per year. I have a 50% NCB: the Jag (daily drivedr) costs me €450 full comprehensive and the MGB... €90! Hard to beat. My wife also has her 01 Mazda insured there, my be it helps.

Im kind of in the same positon as the OP, 19 yo, full license. Im just wondering would the only way for me to be insured on a classic car is for it to be my second car? Or would I be able to get my old fella to get classic insurance on it and have me as a named driver?

I suspect the insurance companies wouldn't offer a 2nd car policy to a 19 yo (hopefully I'm wrong). Don't think they allow named drives on them either.

If First Ireland won't let you insure it as a first car, 10,000 miles policy, then get your dad to do it (as his main car) and put you on as a named driver.

They will charge extra for the named driver. I'm paying about €200 extra for my wife as a named driver (on a provisional licence)

Some Insurers will cover a car younger than 20 years old.

    An early MX-5?
