I've seen this bandied around a few places, least of a all a thread that was banned here today...

    It is not true.

    First of all:
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0823/housing.html
"The new figures show almost one in five first time buyers are foreign nationals."

Whether you believe it or not, second time+ buyers, and investors/speculators between them make up the bulk of the market.
Now the point is that FTB's only make up 30-40% of the market. So 1 in 5 of this is not all that much.

[I can't find the stats suggesting FTB's make up 30-40% of the market, but have seen before, if someone finds a link please post]

And why should we care who first time buyers are?

Strangely when RTE ran that report they interview an asian doctor who was buying his second house for investment purposes surely they could of found an actual first time buyer.

Well thats a little less shocking than expected. I read the title as meaning 4 out of 5 houses are bought by foreigners. :D

Why is it so important to you to show that foreigners do not compose such a large share of the house-buying public?

Worst.Thread.Ever. Why does it matter if they are foreign?

Bleeding foreigners are swarming into Galway I tells ye!

Somehow they are getting in by the droves, I don't know if they are sneaking through the borders, but the place is swamped with them.

There should be checkpoints set up to keep them all out, a bit of barbed wire strung along the border might help, maybe a few machine gun posts.

I don't know how many overall but their strange accents just aren't the same as the locals and see the bleeding things they wear, god'll mighty Jaysus.

If these Mayo immigrants keep crossing the border, north of Tuam into Galway City and surrounding areas, with their bleeding woolly jumpers and wellies, we will be taken over for sure.

Get back to Mayo, the bleedin lot of ye, thats what I say, ye don't belong here, out wi ye, go on.

Agreed. Ruu, I think it's time you wielded your patented "every thread that's about 'de foreigners' gets closed" weapon. Hurry! It's needed here!
