Career Frustration!!!

Ok, Im doin Art for a year in Ballyfermot this year, then still dunno wha to do afterwards

Ill more than likely end up doin Visual Communications or Photography in DIT afterwards. But Im not sure wha to do now

I kinda decided Photography, but now im changin my mind [im very fickle :(]

I'd love either job, but the ones difference is the money. If i did Visual Comms, I could get a job straight away with good pay. With Photography, i'd hafta do the whole 5 low paid years t get noticed thing, but then i'd be gettin bigger payments

    So, yeah. Any advice?

Think i'll jus flip a coin

THE COIN IS ALL KNOWING AND GREAT

Would you be interested in going to NCAD? You can do Vis Comm there.

    Its full of hippies :D

To answer you question, do VC and keep photography on as a serious hobby, you can still make a career out of it once you build up a good portfolio. I think having a degree in photography is not that important as having good work, in the industry (might be wrong, I'm a software programmer, but that is what i've heard)

Well if you're doing the Ballyfermot thing for a year why not get in contact with as many photographers/newspapers/local publications/whoever and start whoring yourself now.
You could surely spare a day or two a week if someone will have you. I think it's already been said here that it's probably the best way to break into photography. At least that way you'll find out if you like the whole photography thing.
And don't worry about being indecisive, chances are in 20 years time you'll probably still be wondering what you want to do with your life ;)

Get in contact with people. Best thing to do. NCAD is good fun, but as you said, some people just don't like it. Photography can come into your work in quite a big way in either Viscomm, Print or Media. I'm going into media next year after core.

ha yeah its true i was up their today applying for a evening course and their was a guy singing and doinin a hula hoop in the middle of the room!

Im in the exact situation, I did art in ballyer last year and realized i liked photography but it was to late by then. I dont wanna do art but want to do graphics or photography. I have a place in marino doing photography but dont know wheater to do graphics and i have to decide tomoro

Visual Communication in NCAD is a good mix between photography and art/graphics so i want to go there next year, mite be hard for me to get it cos i have a crap leaving cert though

I'd go to NCAD, check out the open day or just go down there I dont think they mind but id check first

What course are u doin in ballyer?, they have a darkroom there that you can use for Black and White Photography

    Art, Graphics and Printmakin

was interviewed late so missed out on ADM, but they all have the same Photography content

Yeah, I was thinkin of just doin Visual Comms and doin Photography in my own time, then maybe one day take it up on its own. Visual Comms would be handy though, cos its got a lot of photography, and related stuff
    [graphics, PS etc]

And I should be able to get a good payin job fast enough

Yeah, ill hafta go visit NCAD some time, I dont know anythin abt it, jus not mad abt it, hard t explain

Thanks people, ye've calmed me head!!!!!!

Well, if you want, I'll be back in Dublin soon enough.

I'm sure we could sneak you in for a peep about NCAD!

I'd be pushing you more towards media than VisComm though :D;)

I'd recommend you have a look around NCAD, when I was starting 6th year I had no real desire to go to NCAD, but after looking about and talking to people there I changed my mind. Also, after seeing the other options NCAD was definatly the better for me.

    I'm starting in a few weeks and I can't wait. Hopefully it'll be how I imagine :)
