Where can I get a CO2 cylinder for beer?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know where I can get a CO2 cylinder?

I am a keen home brewer and have just managed to get my hands on six, 19 litre, ball lock, Cornelius kegs. These are the same type that Pepsi use to deliver to fast food places, etc. and are very commonly used by American home brewers. http://www.northernbrewer.com/kegs-disconnects.html for more info.

I can get all the parts I need to dispense my beer using these kegs, by ordering from the states, but I need to source the carbon dioxide locally. Does anyone know where I can get a carbon dioxide cylinder to hook up to this system? I am located in city centre Dublin.

I have tried sending an email to BOC, but no one got back to me and http://www.bocgases.ie seems to be broken.

We used to get them from the local up to recently, but it seems there stopping the half sized cylinders so all you can get is those tall ones that are about 5 or 6 feet and they wont let them out for some reason.

    Séan,

I'm in the same boat as I recently got a corny keg and I've been trying to get the gas sorted.

As soon as BOC found out I wanted the C02 to dispense beer they didn't want to know - 'We don't do that anymore. we only deal with pubs now'. You may have more luck going through the Plant Hire Centres if you can get them to give you the exact gas you want. As far as I know the C02 bottles used for welding are the same as the pub bottles but I'm not 100% certain. I rang an Air Products dealer and they seemed willing to help but their bottles are an Argon/C02 mix - fine for welding but not for my beer I would imagine. Both BOC and AirProducts work on a rental basis so you can't buy the bottle. You are charged a fee per day/month and a refill fee. I think it works out about 100 euro per year...

I'm sure there must be other sources of C02 out there but I haven't discovered them yet. If I get lucky I'll share the info. Likewise keep me posted if you have any success!

I'd try a friendly local pub myself.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm surprised at how difficult it is turning out to be, to get a bit of co2. You'd swear it was some exotic gas I was trying to get.

I wonder why BOC are not interested in selling to the public. I mean, my money is as good as a pubs.

I have emailed http://shop.brewcrew.ie/ who do home bars, kegs, etc. delivered to your home, so maybe I'll have some luck with them. Will post if it works out.

If your mate's with someone that's own's a pub maybe would be your best shot, or else say you run a paintball place and need to refill CO2 cannister's.

Anyways wouldn't mind knowing how ya do it? ;)

Saw a BOC truck unloading canisters of CO2 and Nitrogen mix to a pub in Drumcondra today. Perhaps some mannner of covert operation to acquire a canister could be implemented...

Please refrain from stupid comments that suggest dangerous or illegal activity.

People, everyone likes a bit of comedy, but not at boards expense yeah?

If you want to type something humorous ask yourself could it get the most stupid person you know into trouble if they read it and took it literally, if the answer is yes, then you should be posting it in humour and not a forum where the agenda is not humour based.

One of your best bets could be looking around for a hydroponic shop.

They do them there is a few around but not really sure which ones sell CO2 but I would imagine most big hydro shops would.

I am actually in the process of getting the co2 from BOC. They make you jump through some hoops, but will sell it to you in the end.

I did get BOC to sell me the co2 in the end. It's about €5 a month to rent the cylinder (can't remember exactly) and €18 for a fill of gas.
