I just got a video of a live version of a song (by someone unknown) and was wondering is it possible for me to seperate this into an mp3 from a wmv file?

A friend is after recommending cubase but I don't have the money :D Just wondering is there an easy and straight forward way of converting the video just to a plain sound file?

    Audacity.

Play the video and set Audacity to record "what you hear". It will record whatever is outputted by your sound card. Just make sure to close down any apps that make sound alerts etc as they will be recorded too. ;)

Back in the day, it used to be possible to slice up WMVs (separate out the streams and whatnot) and the like using GraphEdit?

This would give you the actual audio stream in the file rather than some analogue recording of same - you could probably then convert that into whatever you want?
