Hi, I have gen4 20g ipod which stopped working yesterday and basically I'm trying to find out if anyone else had the same problem and could it be resolved. It had been working perfectly up to yesterday evening when I turned it on and nothing happened. Then a picture of a folder came up with a warning sign and underneath it said www.apple.com/support/ipod
So, I went online and followed their steps to reset it and manually switch it to hard disk mode but neither step worked. I also charged it all night but it's not recognising the charge and when I connected it to the PC, it wasn't showing up as connected.
So has this happened to anyone before?

Yeah exactly the same thing happened to my friends Nano, unfortunately she had to send it back to get it sorted, I tried all the steps they indicated on the apple web site for her but to no avail,
    Bloody apple.

I had the same problem myself. Ipod just went dead, folder symbol kept coming up, plugged it into my PC, wouldn't work, tried on some else's PC, wouldn't work, Battery symbol came up then, I tried chargin it but that doesn't work either. They are sh@t and I would never get one again.

Thanks for the replies. Just to update, I went to an Apple shop after work yesterday and found out the hard-drive had died. I was pretty pissed off because it would cost the same to fix as buying a new one. Anyway, I've always kept mine in an i-skin and when I took it out you could see that the white face part had actually become separated from the shiny back. In fairness I did drop it a couple of times and it has taken a few knocks.
So, I ended up buying a 60gb video! You're probably thinking I didn't learn my lesson with the last one but taking into consideration how much I use it (everyday minimum 4 hours playtime) and the abuse it had received I said I'd take the plunge again. The price was also a big factor. I got the 60gb with a cover case for ¥47,000 which works out at about 310yoyo's. I think that's the same price as a 30gb at home! I like the interface of the ipod and I find itunes very handy. I never had a problem with my old one up 'til that day so I just hope this one lasts longer.

If you want I can probably fix your old one. I've fixed many ipods before. I've also fixed ipods with the folder mark on the screen. The hard drive hasn't gone from the ipod yet. It just needs a lot of tweaking and diagnostics have to be run. So if your interested pm me.

I've had a similar problem lately. My iPod would play music fine but would not connect to my P.C. When I tried connecting it I could hear the hard disk whirring and then clicking as if it was trying to read a sector but couldn't which I think may also happen when the folder is displayed on the screen.

Anyway, a good smack sorted it, see this site http://arrowsofthought.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8A74C3D5D2BE50C8!345.entry?txtName=dave&blogcs=end

I thought it was just waffle when I first read it but as I couldn't even connect to windows explorer to format it I had nothing to loose. A couple of well timed slaps sorted it eventually so I could then at least backup my music that was on the iPod and not my laptop (a previous incident with my old laptop resulted in the loss of alot of my stuff leaving the only copies on my iPod).
