Ok, old machine, need to get it running nicely on Windows XP for not a lot of cash. Going to go the Ebay route probably (have an ad up in wanted but not expecting much from that).

Anyway, machine is an old ECS mobo (not sure of the model yet, which I think can only take 100fsb). Socket A. Currently has a Duron 600 and 384MB of RAM, 4GB Hrd Disk (Real dog). Nvidia TNT2 16MB. CD Drive. Windows 98SE.

Not needed for anything hectic. Web browsing, watching divx movies, connecting to digital camera etc.. no games, no heavy duty processing.

Not interested in hearing about Dells latest bargains either. I can do most of this for pennies on Ebay if I am clever (I have had good experiences on Ebay)

Anyway, thinking a Tbird to give it a bit of go(not mad on their thermal properties), have seen Tbird 1200's, also Duron 1.3s for half nothing on Ebay. Obviously the tbird is better, but the duron I saw comes packaged with a heatsink (tempting). Assuming the mobo can handle, if not I am sure it will clock down. Was thinking Athlon XP.

Maybe get the Ram up to 512.

Hard drive sounds like its being castrated, so its a biigie, thinking of 40gb seagate barracuda or WD caviar, not worried about cache too much, or 5400rpm vs 7200rpm.

DVD /CDRW Combo would be nice too.

Am I going about this the right way (reckon I can get all of this for under 100 euro easily). I think the graphics card might be fine. Probably not worth upgrading that for the use it will get.

Any comments on any of this ? Especially the CPU ?
