    Hi All

Was thinking of getting a 20.in Dell Ultra Sharp 2007WFP after reading some good review's but noticed the max resolution was 1,680 x 1,050.
What I would like to know is how come most top end Graphics card reviews always seem to judge a card by 1,600 x 1,200 resolution scores , is this a better resolution or is there more detail in the picture and is there much of a difference between the 1,680 x 1,050 resolution and the 1,600 x 1,200 resolution.

    Also

Is it worth buying a top end Graphics Card to drive a 1,680 x 1,050 monitor?

    Thanks Martin

afaik the reason that they use 1600x1200 is thats what most games highest playable res is..

Either way u'll need a decent top end card to be playing games at 1680x1050, most games can be tweaked to play at that res, see http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/

Well 1600x1200 is a 4:3 resolution, and 1680x1050 is a widescreen (16:10 - most computer widescreens use 16:10 as opposed to 16:9 you often get with TV's) resolution.

The 1680x1050 screen only has a slightly lower pixel count, so like Unklerosco said, you will need a top end graphics card to play modern games at that resolution. Lots of games now support widescreen resolutions out of the box. Two that do (for example) are Half-Life 2 and GTA San Andreas.

Yeah I wouldn't go with anything below a 6600GT... mine handles 1680x1050 just fine for most games... hl2, farcry, etc... but often times I'll have to go without the nice little extras like 16x AF if I want to get a decent framerate.

Those games are old now. You're going to need a beast of a graphics card to run games at a resolution like that. You might even have to go down the SLI or Crossfire route. Games like Oblivion have trouble running at full specs on top cards at 1280*1024.

Also, a lot of games need to be altered to run at a widescreen resolution, check out http://www.widescreengamingforum.com for more info.

Thanks for the reply lads, that clears up a lot of things, think I’ll go for the monitor after all.

Sorry about the late reply working late all week.
