I posted a thread roughly 2 weeks ago about my emachines system dying on me. I got a new system today. The PC shop gave me back my old C:\ and installed a new HDD, I bought a portable HDD casing to put my old C:\ into it and get back my files but when I try to access My Documents its saying Access Denied but I can access other folders on the disc, how can I get back My Documents from my old system?
I also had another 200GB HDD with a sh!t load of media files on it which they installed into my new system but I can't seem to see this drive in My Computer, I am absolutly sh!ting it incase I've lost my 150GB+ worth of mp3's etc... Is there any way I can get my data back on this drive?

Whats most likely happened here is that they have either set the jumper wrong on the HDD, or even ommited it entirely (which I have seen one place do).

Did you have your profile on the old computer password protected? If so, you will need to take ownership of the folder.

Thanks for the replies lads!!! Got access to My Documents and got some very valuable files back. Still have to get into my 200GB HDD, there is one jumper on the disk drive, I can't get it out. If I get the jumper out what's the correct setting for it?

There'll either be a jumper map summary on a label on the front of the drive, or you'll find the marks CS(CarrierSelect=Automatic) SL(Slave) MA(Master) over your jumper positions. If both drives are on the same ribbon cable, have a look at the jumper on the C drive and see which of the above it's set to. If it's set to CS then your 200GB should also be set to CS. If it's set to MA then your 200gb should be set to SL.

PS. Your c drive should be on the connector at the far end of your ribbon cable and your 200gb on the connector half way between the c drive and the system board.

My C drive is a SATA drive (if that makes sense?) its not on the ribbon for my 200GB drive, there's a red cable coming from the c drive and into the motherboard. The 200GB drive is in the middle of the ribbon cable and the CD-ROM drive is the first drive on the ribbon. I'm going to open the case now and see the jumper setting again. Would the SATA drive have jumpers on it?

If C drive is SATA then forget about it. It's fine as is.

Ideally if you have two IDE connectors on your motherboard you would run seperate cables to your CD and 200GB drive, as the CD will have a slower transfer rate and slow down the 200GB.

If you've only one connector then check to see if the CD is set as CS or Primary/Master. If CD is set to CS then set 200GB to CS. If CD set to Primary/Master then set 200GB to Secondary/Slave.

I've attached a screen print of what I see in Computer Management (Disk 1 is the problem drive) and also the different jumper settings that I've tried and still nothing. Please break it to me gently if it's bad news :(

    Stephen,

I wouldn't panic too much just yet, as there's a fair amount of things to try.

Disconnect the ribbon cable from the CD(just to rule it out of the equation) and connect the end of the ribbon cable to the 200GB drive. Set the drive to CS and see if it's recognised okay(also worth seeing what it says for the drive in your Bios setting). If no change, try the drive as Primary/Master and try again.

Have you checked to see if you have two IDE sockets on your system board. If you have, I'd strongly recommend that you have the CD and drive on seperate cables.

I haven't tried the above yet but I have connected the 200GB drive to an external casing for HDD's (http://www1.canyon-tech.com/products/show.cfm/Peripherals/Storage/Portable_HDD/CN-CASE525) and the same thing happens as when its inside the computer.
Any ideas as to what I should do next? Are there any companies out there that could salvage the data with some specialised equipment?

    Hokey cokey

If the problem still exists with the Disk 1 reading foreign, you can right click and click "Import" or something to that effect, basically the disc is unrecognised by Windows and needs confirmation from yourself to be initialised on the system.

If this fails to resolve the issue I would also try and going to the "My Documents" on the problematic C:\ drive and select "Run As" then use your old credentials you used to login to your old system - this should grant you access to your folders u need to transfer across
