Stupid question about USB key

Sorry in advance for asking what I'm sure is a stupid question. I bought a Busbi USB key today and when I just tried to save a simple Word Document on it the PC kept telling it couldn't save the file there. It seems to have two drives associated with it called P and G. I'm assuming it's the G drive I save to cause the other one is called something like "Clever stuff".
Have a been a fool and bought a really crap piece of equipment or am I just being really really thick? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Is it formatted? Can you browse to it?

I'm pretty sure it's the G drive you save to. The "clever stuff" is probably annoying utilities. Some of the drives, you can remove that partition. (does it have a special icon instead of a disk picture if you look in "My Computer"? - also, if you click "Safely remove hardware" in the systray, what can you see?

The drive letter will vary from computer to computer depending how many other drives are installed.

Are you sure the write protect switch is not on??

If your USB memory key thing contains multiple partitions (that are formatted with a recognised FS), each will appear as its own drive letter.

I've got a 2GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro here - it's one of these U3 yokes, and it appears as two drive letters - the first is read-only (and appears like a CD) and contains the U3 applications and stuff, and the second is the writable one.

If it helps, the writable partition always gets the higher drive letter (e.g. if the key appears as E: and F:, the writeable partition is *always* F: )

    Hope this helps,
