I've never posted my work here, so i've no idea how it might be received... however the curiosity has finally gotten the better of me! I'm in my late teens and just finished the LC. The first poem below was written in response to seeing the Dublin skyline from a train - an endless expanse of cranes and new buildings. The second refers to the public obsession with the rich lifestyle people yearn for (the great silver beast is a Mercedes). Number three is an unusual one about an overweight person in a fast food outlet who suffers what is a widespread addiction to food. The final one is my poor attempt to get something to rhyme! It was written when I was trying to fill out my CAO!

The Rise of the New Tulip

Fresh, tall and vibrant, they rise up,
    Dominating an historic skyline,
    Mere forgettable monuments, though,
To the modern virtues of this land

    Speculation is rampant,
As yet ever more sprout up,
    All clamber; transfixed,
    By their raw monotonous magnificence.

Finally the wild geese have returned,
Perhaps weary and fatigued by their foreign toil,
But, oh so easily caught, in the superb daze,
    Of such a noble opiate.

    Politicians, economists; the masses too,
    Race to appease the insatiable appetite;
Strive to conceive, create and construct ever more,
For grandiose opulence is their life's sole pursuit.

However, the final days draw near,
When the harsh winter will engulf all,
    And the unforgiving world, will,
    Eventually defeat the little tulip.

At least until the next summer of exuberance,
When the ludicrous game will be reborn,
And eagerly embraced with renewed glee,
By the infinitely wiser sons of prosperous fools.

    Sins of Modernity

    King's of our great land,
    Traverse its opulent, grey plain
    By great silver beasts,
Endless trains of followers in pursuit.

    Gaudy wealth fails to dent,
    Their admirable lives,
    Of lavish feasts by day
And adulterous adventures in the dark of night.

    Tastelessness is of no concern,
As peasants aspire to equal greatness,
    Conniving, deceiving, stealing, misleading;
All willing tools of this fantastic charade.

    Plodding from place to place,
    Plump nobles indulge in,
    Endless conspicuous consumption,
As iconic gluttony ravages a great nation.

    Penance is not for them!
    For punishment has been reserved
    Solely for murderous scoundrels,
Not these fine paragons of excess.

    And as the sinister landlords,
Dream of great rents; the TV flickers,
For this satanic land exists now,
Not in the ancient crevices of history.

    Vegetated Mind of a Savage

    Like beached whales,
They sit, in herds, and stare,
    Creatures of entrenched passivity,
    And yet such ferocious consumption!
    Occasional waddles to seek supplies,
    The only obvious strain.

    An acceptable addiction?
In an expansive world of starvation!
    Stubborn animals of procrastination!
    Arrogance, ignorance, or youthful innocence?
    What splendid naivety,
    Could fuel such perpetual greed?

    Voluminous mountains of waste,
    Are, sadly, no deterrent;
    For relentless grazing,
    Necessitates no humane care,
    When such warped introversion
    Serves, only, ones personal desires.

Oh, the objects they yen for!
    Tantalize every natural sense,
But yet merely tangential, and superficial,
They shall fail with remarkable consistence,
To satisfy for more than a meager second,
Oh, such fools of resilient temptation!

    Slothful Indecision

    I sit, downbeat and depressed,
Pondering the heavy chores of tomorrow,
    Such a verbiage of worries,
Fuel the vermilion fire of sorrow

    Shut; by the laudanum of life;
    It drains the minds marrow.
    Absolute decision, hindered,
    Like a rusted, stiff barrow.

    Why must I choose,
    So perfect, certain and thorough!
    Life must be freely lived,
Like the robin, crow or sparrow!

    So cruel and in just!
My gauntlet I fail to throw
As I am seized by inaction,
From bare foot to my heads deepening furrow.

But yet it is a prerequisite for existence,
A fine fulcrum in my life, so
    I shall inevitably concede,
    To decide before tomorrow.

Thanks for reading, feedbak is welcome... but try not to be too harsh. I have several more pieces I may post in the future.

Thank you for sharing your work. I did enjoy reading them and the last two were favorites of them all.
I would love to see more.

Sometimes I think it is better for a writer to develop without criticism rather than with criticism. So my feedback to you is simply this - keep writing.

Hey, I enjoyed your last one best. You have a very formal style and tone, which takes some getting used to, but admirable all the same! It would be easier to focus on them in depth if you posted one poem at a time. Please share more :)

    Thanks Shiv

    "very formal style and tone"

5yrs of studying Yeats and Co. for the L.C. does that!
