Dublin Open - Update

    Hey guys,

The Dublin Open Submission Tournament is scheduled for September 23rd in UCD's Sports Hall.

This will be the exact same format as the NSC, same weight divisions and experience categories.

However we are facing a delay due to it being out of term. Clubs swap committee members over term and it ca`n be tricky getting them to sign over their hall time.

We should (fingers crossed) have confirmation within the next day or two so and I'll email out registration forms.

As a thank you for your patience, there'll be no late registration fee applied to this event.

    Any questions, please post her.

    Colm

I know you said the format is the exact same but is there any special reason for the name change? Entry fee the same as last time?

You can't have 2 national championships! Then there'd be two national champions 2006!

Nothing beats rock my friends. As of next Tuesday I am in training! C'mon sub 75!!

4)"ooh, lay off the pies mate..."
5)"...or you'll end up like him"

There's only one National Championships, and they're late April/Early May each year.

The RCI's vision would be to have 3/4 regionals each year - like Dublin, Galway, Belfast, (but not Limerick because of Tim Murphy) and a national championships.

Then there could be 3/4 Team events as well. Wouldn't that rock

Entry fee is €20/€25 on the day.

    Weight Categories
    -62Kg
    -68Kg
    -75Kg
    -83Kg
    -92Kg
    +92Kg

Experience divisions: -6 Months, -12 Months, +12 Months. With the popular weight categories, depending on numbers, we split up the +12 Months. In the -75Kg Division last year, it was -20 Months and +20 Months, and was done for numbers sake. IIRC we did a +24 Months in 83Kg as well.

I'm currently looking at alternative locations in the unlikely event that we can't secure UCD.

Entry forms will be online shortly. For those who can't wait, email info[at]spartanmma.com

Depends if we're pushed for time. If there's a basketball game that night we're out at four, which means some events may go.

This is probably the order I'd cut events:
    Absoluto
    Lightsabers
Reduce matches to four minutes (most matches that end in sub do so in 90seconds to two minutes)
    Have all the matches RPS!
    what is the RCI?

All in good time my friend, all in good time.

Why do you use acroymns on a public forum no one understands? Private jokes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭The Shane

For those who understand- no explanation is necessary. For those who don't- none is possible.

Someday you may come to understand these things that your elders have tried to shield you from and regret the loss of your innocence.

Dublin open sub wrestling competition - someone get that idea across but with an arrangement of letters that spell something. I for one am all about the acronyms.

This board is full of private jokes. Plus, what The Shane said.

As regards acronyms, I called it the NSC, but some people called it the Sub Champs. I call this one the Dublin Open, but some will call it DOST.

Tim, come to dublin, train with me, we'll go bowling, it'll be fun!

I also want to know what the RCI is. Although I can hazard a guess that it involves the Shane, Colum, and alcohol, based upon previous documentary evidence.*

I would like to publically state that Colum has at no time been affiliated with, in the service of, or profited as a direct result of the actions of the RCI.

Yep, leaving on the 20th of this month, first stop: Peru!! :) (so Clive got the town wrong, continent right!)

    That is a tempting offer...

Nah, that would have to be done at ROT, it wouldn't be fair on the irish fans otherwise! :)

That sounds great Tim, bring me back a lama... (thats the only thing I can think of when I think of Peru)

On the other hand, there is my offer.... the bowling train is leaving.... no? No?:D

    2 weeks to go!

With any luck the Dublin Open will mark the first event in the 2006-2007 Sub Championships, with the even culminating in the NSC 2007. Finally our sport is getting a nice structure.

Just imagine, 4 Amateur MMA League, 4 Sub Champs, 2,3 or even 4 Team Events. And that's just an amateur level. We'd have a complete and full season!

If any club has Junior competitors please email me at info[at]spartanmma.com and we can provide the younglings with an opportunity to develop in this sport.

Sounds great but I don't know if there is enough competitors to support that many competitions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

If you build it, they will come.

Currently, I would agree with you that there isn't enough. But I think with the structure in place, that will attract newcomers to the sport. As opposed to trying to get people who are interested in competing in, and then coming up with a structure.

Colm, I'll try and get approximate numbers of kids to you by the end of this week. They'll all be in the points/no-subs category.

    THIS SATURDAY!

For those of you who have sent in entries, thank you.

For those of you who like to make me sweat by waiting until the last minute, get them in now! (Email info[at]spartanmma.com)

In other Dublin Open news it's looking like we'll have a stellar turn out for the Junior Division this year, and it's looking likely there will be at least one junior subs division.

This can only lead great things for the sport. Think in about 5-8 years MMA Leaguers will have a ton of subs experience before adding in the strikes; MMA will be so popular ROT will regularly sell out the National Stadium and I'll be heralded as a GOD (well, we can always hope :D )

For those of you who are curious about children and submissions this is my general rule. I teach kids subs from 9 upwards (my young spartan class). They learn bent and straight armlocks and the triangle. The triangle is easier to spot and less detressing (most of the time there is no strangulation). The importance of tapping is drilled home with these youngsters. Also, they don't apply the sub, just set it up (no hip action)

Once they're out of primary they can learn chokes and strangulations.

As for the Dublin Open, and future RCI endorsed Sub Champs events, I'll discuss the finer points with the other coaches on the day.

Now, get those entries in, or Jim will be mad!

Oh brother, we at KO Martial Arts will be submitting our entries on Tuesday night after training when we can confirm weight categories and attendees. I didn't mean to anger Jim, but its been a busy time for me!!!
