Stuck this up on PI and not much response. I'm just beginning to understand adjustment layers and masks. It just clicked with me the other night  after all this time. Anyway I "painted" this with a black layer mask and, well I like it.

I really would appreciate your honest critique thingy tho'

Clicking on the picture will bring you to Flickr where there is a large version. Looking at the larger version is way better I think. Go raibh mile....

I like it. At first I thought it was a little too dark but when I saw the large version I changed my mind. I love the glow coming from behind the rock (if thats what it is), I didnt see that until I viewed the large version. Really nice shot, makes you take a good long look!!

should really post here rtaher than on the other thread. Not sure what it is about the glow as it is a nice effect but it does lead me away from the detail in the image and i think the light hitting the gate is particluarly nice. Nice ligts, shaeds and colour

Thanks gang. I'll post the original later. It's fairly different.

FreeAnd... I take your point about the glow. In fact that was the main reason I posted the shot, to see how others felt about it. Sometimes when you are close to a picture after taking it and working on it. it's difficult to to be objective. I'll come back to the photo in a couple of weeks and see how I feel then. Thanks.

No problem Valentia, I think the image would work great as a poster for something. The glow around the rest works really well but i think it is just a little thick against the pure black background so every time i look at the image i am drawn to this area rather than to the areas being hit with light. This sort of reminds me of the pster from unforgiven from a few years back so maybe there is meant to be more said in the shade than in the light so possibly being lead away frmo the detail might make sense? Does this make any sense?

I love the texture on the stone, not too fond of the vignette effect around it tho, I dunno it looks photoshopped which is something a photoshopped image shouldn't!! Looking forward to seeint the original.
    Good work

Sometimes I won't post c&c because I'm not neccessarily sure how I feel about a picture.

There's stuff to like about this, but something doesn't sit right, at the same time. I love how it looks so metallic, it's quite surreal, and the dark sky and mysterious glow adds to that. I think my biggest annoyance is the actual gate bit - the modern tubular steel just takes away from the lotr/fantasy look of the whole scene - of course, there's not much you can do about that though.

I think the approach to the glow round the post could be slightly more subtle, and the contrast/sharpening on the post is slightly overdone. I can see some detail on the dark side of the post in the large version, but it would still be nice to see it a little bit easier in the smaller ones.

It would be quite interesting to see the original, and maybe get a couple of different approaches, though.

Thanks everyone. I'm beginning to detect a pattern :) I am not sure about the glow but the more I look at this pic the more I like it. It just appeals to me. It is also an experiment into Noah Grey territory. I just love his stuff and want to get a feel for how to achieve that style, hence the severe contrast. (I've just noticed while looking up the link that he uses blur at the edge of the subject so there isn't a harsh transition to the contrasts. I'll try that later.)

I suppose my association with the location effects my judgement. The orogonal is way different but I'll have to wait 'till this evening to post it. Thanks again.
