Never have been. I always find the atmosphere a lot better when it's dark. So I love the dark

I wouldn't be afraid of it but then again I'm not the biggest fan of the dark either. Probably because I'm always afraid of some intruders coming in (even though I live in a decent neighbourhood) or something, but I have mr.hockey stick ready. :)

Yeah, I've never been afraid in water either. Even when swimming in deep water where sharks have been before. Just crazy I guess.

It's natural that people can be afraid of the dark, human nature is to fear what you can't see. So if there IS something there bumping into stuff while the lights are off, it's bound to give you a shiver or two.
Course you can get over it. I haven't been afraid of the dark ever since I was 11. Cycling home one night, and passing by a few fields - heard this chain rattling. Instantly I thought of some creepy maniacal freak with a chainsaw who'd for some reason been tied up by a chain or had a chain with him (made sense at the time). Anywho, the chain rattled a good few times, and I'd nearly shat myself.
The next morning I was going by the same field, and saw a goat tethered to a post with a chain. :o

All your other senses become more active when you're in the dark which is pretty cool.

As a kid i couldnt stand being in the dark, as i always though monsters were comming to kill me, I was subjected to foreign satelite tv when i was young, Scared the crap outta me.

But was shipped off to boarding school and had to put up with it. SO i learned to get over it. Now i prefere the dark

Has anyone ever caught a reflection of themselves in a mirror at night? Say when you get up to use the bathroom and don't put any lights on - but the light from street lamps gets in and you can see yourself.

    Always scares me.

Back in the day I used to get scared of the "real dark" out in the country, like up in Donegal where my grandparents used to live. Way out in the middle of frickin nowhere. At night it got proper dark up there and you could hear things. Weird things. You'd hear a daddy-longlegs hopping about, sniggering, somewhere and everywhere in the room. Those b*stards. I still hate them. Your brain plays all kinds of wonderful tricks on you. If you're anyway paranoid it can be great fun scaring the sh*t out of yourself. The dark these days doesn't have the same chill factor, what with the plague of orange-glowing motorway lighting, lamposts, spotlights and the like.

No, that usually happens when I wake up and look in the mirror first thing in the morning.:)

I guess all those thousands of years living in the glow of firelight has conditioned us somewhat.

I wonder do people who spend alot of time outdoors in the daylight become more apprehensive in the dark? Or vice versa?

I like the dark. I feel comfortable at night. I hate bright lights in the house. I can't sleep unless it's really dark. Sometimes I scare the bejaysus out of myself, but that's all part of the attraction I suppose. I'm not a vampire. I do like sunny days and all, but I just like the night as well.

Never liked it much as a kid, either, as the house I grew up in was full of creaks and boards moving and things going bump in the night. As an adult, I had a stalker when I was about aged 21 who one night broke in and appeared at the foot of my bed, just standing there watching me sleep-it would probably represent most fairly the point in my life in which I began to have a really unreasonable fear of the dark. I hate it most when I'm alone.

I prefer to sleep in the dark. Much better than trying to in lighted conditions, natural or unnatural light.

Yes! I hate looking in mirrors when it's dark. You never know what you're going to see, if that makes sense. I guess I must have a bit of an over-active imagination sometimes, but I do notice that now and then I can get myself really worked up when it's dark and I have to go out the back of the house to get something, even though I know it's daft.

Also after watching horror movies, I get a bit jumpy, but I think it's not that i'm afraid of the dark, more of the fact that you can't see what's going on combined with the fact that you tend to be alone in the dark.

Unless you work at night. I do :(

Jesus smallpaws. You are exempt from scorn for being afraid of the dark. I wouldn't blame you. I'd probably sleep with a rifle under the duvet if that happened. I'm not saying I currently don't sleep with a gun :D

I like it when I'm tired enough to sleep, I hate it when I wake up in the middle of the night and I can't get back to sleep... end up lying there freaking myself out that theres someone trying to break in or something :o .. Pretty sad I know

Used to be when I was a kid. Forced myself to sit in pitch dark for hours as I got older and now I love it. But I do still convince myself of some freaky things sometimes!

I dont mind the dark as long as its not pitch dark (cant see yer hand infront of yer face). As a kid I got a few frights - waking up with cats walking on my bed, couldnt see what was there - just 2/4 eyes (we dont own a cat, they climbed in somehow - that totally freaked me out).

Always used to make shapes out of things when I couldnt really see them (i.e. a jacket thrown on yer chair = a crouching man / big dog). After a weekend of heavy drinking I tend to get the fear going to sleep on sunday and have to get up and walk around the house with the lights on! What can I say - I'm a paranoid bastid - especially when I'm alone.

A tiny bit of background / ambient lighting goes a long way in my book.

    Do you remember the Dark?
    nlgbbbblth wrote:

Once, at work on night security in a factory. Unremarkable, only I'd gone to work straight after some horror film. Possibly Dark Water. Yes, Dark Water. I remember because it was raining and the roof was leaking, adding ominous puddles on the floor to the list of unsettling things that happened.

I love the dark. As one of nature's loomers, it suits me. It's quiet, it's peaceful, and very few people are ever around.

Ever have a fear of mirrors?!
I remember watching Prince of Darkness when I was young. Couldn't look in a mirror for months afterwards...let alone touch a mirror!!
That film did some job on me!

I was on holiday in Kerry a few years ago. I went to sleep and woke up in the middle of the night. It was totaly pitch black. I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face. Anyway, I started to get really paranoid that I'd gone blind!! - Strange things run through my head when I'm sleepy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,122 ✭✭✭LadyJ

I sleep with the light on if I'm on my own.

When I was younger,I was scared that ghosts would get me but now it just makes me nervous in general. I worry about people breaking in to the house etc. I worry about that anyway but the darkness makes it worse.

From discussing it in therapy,I've come to discover that my fear of the dark is just a symptom of my real fear of being alone. It can be the same for a lot of people.

when I was younger, like most kids, I was afraid of the dark. as I got older I got over it. Then I watched Saw, still no fear. I watched Saw 2, still nothing. THEN I watched the trailer for Saw while looking for the special edition, and most trailers contain the scene where Adam is in his apartment. after that I regained my fear, which means I turn off the light before going to bed and have to run to get under the covers :o

I'm not afraid of the dark, just the evil it conceals.
    <_<
    >_>
Seriously though I'm not afraid of the dark at all. I'm one of those people who has to have all the curtains, blinds and doors closed before going to bed so no light gets in. I also find it amusing when it's completely dark and I'm there waving it in front of my face and can't see a thing. The only downside is walking from the lightswitch to my bed and hitting my foot on stuff on the ground.

I am to a certain extent. But only in this area since at night there's no lighting anywhere. I feel like someone's gonna jump out of a bush and grab me. Funnily, I don't feel that way walking around Dublin at night, the street lighting keeps me from panicking.

Speaking of this, I have to collect the wheelie bin from around the corner, should probably leave it till tomorrow...

It's never truly dark in a town or city. That's why I'd never live in an urban area. It's supposed to be dark at night.
