Liddell v. Sobral - Bravo's coverage ** SPOILERS **

I watched Bravo's coverage of this fight last night, it seemed to be a highlight show, I don't know if this is the only format they showed the fight in or was there a "live" show at an earlier date?

For people who were not already aware of the result I think Bravo could have packaged the highlights show differently. On my NTL listing thing on the bottom of the screen I could see that the show started at nine and ended at midnight. As usual with Bravo the show was peppered with ad breaks but that didn't bother me too much, I was busy on my PC so I just turned the volume down during the breaks.

There were some great scraps and all in all the spectacle was enjoyable (I do think that you'd want to be certifiable to get into that cage).

And now for the "but" ... and for me it's a big "BUT". It's twenty past eleven, and the big fight hasn't started yet, we roll past eleven thirty and still no sign of the Iceman. Finally, at about ten minutes to midnight the big boys start to scrap.

So it's around ten to midnight and we're about to go, allow for yet another ad break to finish the extravaganza off, allow for post fight interviews, and even the complete novice like me can work out that this thing is going to last about as long as an ass's gallop!!

Even before the fight starts the only question that remains to be answered is who gets knocked out very early in the first round - it's a good guess that if we have are going to have one of the biggest upsets in recent UFC history and Liddell gets knocked out there would be more time allowed for a slightly longer post fight analysis.

So there it is, Bravo have more or less told me the result before the fight and all I'm watching for is how it ends. Why can't they start showing the big fight at half past eleven and if it is over in under 2 minutes just show another fight afterwards, at least they wouldn't be ruining all the suspense before before the big one even starts.

    Any thoughts?

They need to show the fight in whatever format it is passed to them in. They have certain rules and deals with UFC ( and Spike i believe ) about advertising etc during the show.

The UFC will always do the long wait between the second last and last fight....they use this time to push other fighters, get some names of celebs who have gone to the show up on the screen, push future events and in the case of last night , legitimise BJ Penn as a contender to the new masses who watch the UFC.

It was on in full on Sunday night after Ultimate Fighter 4

There's no one to touch Liddell at the moment...the only one i could even think of would be Tito Ortiz and Liddell has already knocked himout twice !. He's a great champion who looks a bit awkward in the ring but is actually one of the best strikers around and his opponents usually wake up with a gang around them.

the sunday and monday shows were the same - the ppv - clipped to fit into 3hrs of tv time - but the ppv itself ran short and there were 2 undercard matches shown and A LOT of adverts/video packages played during the US ppv itself so i think we got a great deal - free ppv shown the next day on basic cable - all in all, ive no complaints

I don't think Chuck knocked out Tito twice...

Imagine showing the main event last... the bastards, you'd swear they wanted you to watch the whole show or something...

I was simply offering an opinion on Bravo's coverage, that's all. I'm sure there are a million different ways of presenting the show ... I must have mistaken this for a "discussion" board.

I pay for my NTL digital service, so your definition of "free" is as bizarre to me as your definition of "bitching".

Begrudgingly agree with the OP. It's like watching a fight on Youtube and knowing what round it'll end in cause of the time.

    It wasn't Franca

As said, Bravo actually have very little say in the format, most of that is decided by the UFC, that way they can tailor the show to what they want audiences to know.

It was the other guy who had the point taken for turning his back and running away from Franca

Yeah it is really annoying. Looking how close it is till the hour can tell you who wins the main event, it pisses me off.

But I figured out a way around it. Just turn your phone off, get rid of your watch and take the clocks off the wall at the start of the event. It's crude but it worked perfectly on Sunday night. I didn't know whether it would go the distance or end quickly!

Great UFC by the way. Hermes Franca really impressed me with that sweet knee and the armbar.

OK, looks like I've lost this by ground and pound.

There were some helpful suggestions (especially the one about the clocks, the phone, the video, the cooker, the watch, the sundial). I did get one person agreeing with me, but even that was "begrudgingly" (why?)

The majority opinion seems to be I should get back in my box, quit bitching, be a good little serf and be happy with whatever the TV companies throw my way ... without comment ... because after all I'm getting it for free (??!?!)

I'm really looking forward to Hughes V. Penn ... but I'm definitely gonna watch it live - that way I'll get better value for the money it doesn't cost me.

    Good chat.

Begrudgingly cause as Irish MMA fans we really have it good. In fact it's never been better. Free MMA on cable tv AND on the internet.

Ehmmm, the states you would pay your monthly cable charge AND your Pay Per View Price of 40+ dollars, so i guess people are saying yeah, be happy with it.

As for watching it live, that will depend on if Bravo show it live, or show it recorded, or if you watch if over other means.

while i get your point about having a fight begin with 10/15 min left lets you know that it ended early - i just dont see what your alternative is - have a half an hour of post show videos? - have undercard fights put in after the main event? - nobody planed the outcome of the fight and the only reason the live ppvs have swing bouts is that they are trying to sell a 3 hour show and if fights dont do long they need to give ppv subscribers something for their money - this doesnt apply to a tape delayed version and therefore the main event always last - yes the fact that it was an early stoppage was telegraphed (though that didnt necessarily mean liddell was going to win) but its just one of those times that you just have to live with it - its not purely a 'be happy with you lot' response - its a 'well what is it that you expect' response

This was the point I was going to make. Firstly, just because Liddell is a great striker, but that doesn't mean he can't be knocked out and secondly, fights can end early by submission too. There's no reason it couldn't have ended on an early submission from Sobral.

We all know cable isn't free but whether you watch the ppv or not, it's the same price so it's not that bad a deal. It's not perfect but Bravo probably need people watching the ads so they don't have to charge for the ppv (or more likely, just stop showing them) so I don't think it's exactly a bad situation (though to be honest, I was watching on Bravo +1 and switched over to Bravo for the main event and still had time to switch back for Griffen and Bonnar afterwards, so I think my way was best. :D ).

Relax the cacks fella, they put that many ads on so they can sell more ads during what is probably one of their most watched shows.

If you want it ad free, download it, or tape it and fast forward it. I see your point though, did you ever watch the TV3 coverage of the Irish soccer friendlies? Painful!

I noticed after the Liddel Fight Tito Ortiz saying he'd like to fight Chuck in December. Is the LiDdell V Silva fight in November in doubt now??

I've become interested in Pride since this fight was announced. Who has the best fighters, Pride or UFC? Just looking at Silva on Youtube, jaysis, he looks awesome.

Taking UFC and Pride champions at the various weights who would come out on top if they fought.

Also, has Crocop ever fought Fedor? If so, who won? Any clips available?
