need some advice

sorry to bother ye, but i am a girl that is new to this crack! i want advice on where to download mp3's from so i can put them onto my ipod? i have heard about places like limewire, but i know very little about this, so what i am looking for is a site, where i can just go on and download music on to my pc, what is the best value site out there? are there free sites?!! any advise is much appreciated, ive seen adds from eircom, but i hear that they are expensive..

Any free sites are most likely illegal. iTunes is one major store.

I don't know of any free sites, but a word of warning about limewire. I had it for a while - and ended up with a load of viruses and adware (sp?) on my PC.

Best bet would be to download a programme like Ares or something along those lines. I don't have Ares, but I've heard enough people going on about it.

i use lime wire it is excellent once you have a decent antivirus programme and dont search porn thats what spreads the viruses

Limewire itself, as in the piece of software, is not illegal. Its the sharing and / or distribution of copyrighted material thats illegal. It just so happens that LimeWire is a program that enables you to do just that, and thats what its predominantly used for. I have used it in the past and its great for finding stuff, but most of the stuff on it is copyrighted and shouldnt be there in the first place.

Ares, Kazaa, WinMX and all them kinds of p2p filesharing programs are exactly the same, the programs themselves are legal but whats shared with them is usually not.

To be on the safe side you are best to live by the motto that there is no such thing as free music (when i say that i refer to popular up to date stuff like antything you see in the charts etc...). If you see an offer of free MP3s, my advice would be to steer clear because there is no place that offers such a service legally, and legally is the key word.

@ metrovelvet: Filesharing is basically a program that lets you access files on other peoples computers. If you download LimeWire and you have some files you want to share, you basically use LimeWire to choose the folder that the files are in and then you log on to the network where thousands of other users have done the same, you can then see what they share and they can see what you share and if you like something someone has, you download it from their computer as such. Thats it in a nutshell. Again though, usually whats shared is copyrighted stuff, hence why it becomes illegal. To use a metaphor, its like swapping football stickers with your friends. You all meet up and show others what you have and you swap around. The same thing is happening with filesharing except that its done over the internet. I hope that answers your question...
