    Hi to all,

first of all hello to all of you, it's my first posting here - we relocated from germany not too long ago.

As driver of a Reliant Scimitar SS1 I'm looking for other Scimi owners here and for classic and rare cars owners in general - just to chat or cruise around. I'm located down in the south near Cork.

Also we're looking for another Scimi to buy - GTE or GTC. If you have one to offer - I look forward to the details ! Just send an eMail !

Would be great if you have a look at my website and sign my guestbook.

    ... keep on rockin' !
    Rob

Hi Rob, let me be the first to welcome you to boards.ie Classic cars forum anyway. I'm in Cobh, not too far from Cork city. I collect classic cars for a hobby and I repair and deal in modern and classic cars too. From what I can see there aren't too many classic car enthusiasts from around the Cork city or county area here on boards.ie but I could be wrong. Most seem to be based in Dublin and co. Dublin. That said there are a lot of car enthusiasts around the Cork area in general. There are classic car shows on almost every week-end at one venue or another so once you get to know a few of the people involved you won't have any excuse not to attend. As regards a Scimitar that your looking for, there is one in Dempseys Garage in Kinsale, it needs a bit of work but you could check it out if your interested. You'll buy them quite cheaply in England too and you only have to pay a registration fee of 60 euros to register them here in Ireland as long as they're older than 30 years of age and they're exempt from NCT car testing too.

of course I know the UK market for classic cars and as a member of the Scimitar Owners Club it's not a problem to choose from several offers.
But can you tell me a little more about the irish rules for classic cars (my SS1 is not a classic but just an old car at the moment ...) ?

The age limit for the VRT is 30 years, is that correct ? Older than 30 years means a tax of just 60.00 euros ? Any problems to expect when I register it or is it an easy procedure ? (had a little fun when registering the SS1 ...)
Also for the NCT the limit is 30 years ?
What´s about the standard tax for the car - is there also a special fee for older cars or do I have to pay the standard rate depending on the engine volume ??
And do you know any special offer for the insurance of a classic car ??

    thanks & regards
    Rob

You seem to have most of the information about the NCT and VRT right, road tax is only 42 euros a year as long as the car is over 30 years old. The VRT is only 60 euros as long as the car is over 30 years old. As regards insurance it depends on the insurance company tbh, some insurance companies insist on having another car insured to avail of cheap insurance for your classic car. The classic car is exempt from the NCT too.
