I was trying to set up a new Dlink wireless router and it kept telling me to check the power amd cable which both had lit up.

After reconnecting the old router I had no broadband connection, nor when I connected direclty to the ethernet socket thingy. So hopefully thats why I could not get the new router to work.

However when I tried to sort the broadband connection there was nothing in network places, or network configuartions.!

I read the AVG report and it said I have the dyfica trojan (which is really malware) . I think i know how to removve this, but am wondering would this have caused the problem - doesnt seem the case from the little I could check one @ work.

I decided to copy the lappie drive to an external drive, wouldn't let me because of a hiberfil file. Worked out this is re hibernation and to shut it off.

When I tried reconfigurea an always on bband connection, but no luck. IS re-installing Windows my only option ?

My plan (from another thread) was to copy C drive, reinstall windows, do a AV scan on the backup, delete any suspsicious files and then do a clean backup .

Any advise would help. I miss broadband !!

Very similar to a problem I had on a clients machine,I posted a thread thinking it may be virus related but the machine was clean as a whistle + I have seen something like it on 2 other machines, especially the nothing in my network places or network connections. I found a repair didnt work and had to do clean reinstall after all repair attempts/virus scans etc so you final method maybe to resolve to this!

You won't be able to copy all the files over while the drive is in use. Some of the files will be in use by windows and won't allow you access. You'd be better off removing drive and sticking it in a second machine if you want to copy it to the external.

And there is no need to backup the pagefile.sys or hiber.sys files. They'd be useless on the fresh install of windows.
