Lets say Im downloading loads of crap.
and have crappy old system for doing this
    Ignoring Bandwidth and internet speed
Which is more important ... The amount of memory or the CPU speed

or does it matter at all

Neither, your internet connection will determin the speed which you download.

Read/write speed of hard drive would be a factor.

Broadband speed and the size of your hard drive really the crucial factors in the mass downloading game!

As above, get yourself a decent sized hard drive. :)

but wouldnt even a 10 year old 5gb be able to keep up with the transfer you get from broadband these days, say up to 500kbs. surely it would.

Sure it would, for about 12-18 hours. Then it'd be full.

Well if those downloads happen to be via Bittorrent, and you happen to be using Azureus, then RAM wouldn't be a bad idea, 'cos it'll eat your memory. You can also use the RAM as a cache (crank it up to 95MB), and reduce the number of writes to the Hard Drive.

If FTP is your game, I find that CPU speed is more crucial, FTP seems to rape my processor whenever I use it.

Slowest HDD out there would read/write at Ultra-ATA/33, 33MBytes/sec. So not a factor.

    don't use a java client.
    Use bitcomet. Low mem footprint.

Those java clients eat up your ram, disgusting!

Bitcomet is banned from most trackers though.

Stick to the topic. I don't want this descending into the grey area of P2P please.
