Hi guys, Ihave a strange problem. Everytime I go to the windows update site my IE crashes!! Has anybody come accross this problem before?

It's IE6, legit copy, preinstalled on dell computer. XP home SP2.

empty the cache

look up the https:// sites to add to trusted sites in IE

there are a few dll's to re-register too and other really unintuitive stuff.

I find http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to be a real PITA as on far too many machines I've to do stuff to get it working that would be confusing for a non-technical user.

Some of the windows update fixes I've seen - not an exhaustive list by any means

list of "trusted sites"

stop /start update in DOS - reboot too

proxycfg -d
proxycfg -u
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net start bits
net start wuauserv

Remove entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file

to update the windows updater :rolleyes:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/windowsupdateagent20-x86.exe

services
Set Background Intelligent Transfer Service to Automatic and verify the Status is Started
Set Event Log service to Automatic and verify that the Status is Started

Since he's running XPSP2, this shouldn't be a problem since Microsoft bypass the hosts file for their own domains.

so when the lads figure out how to hijack that mechanism for phishing etc. will there be any way for the average user to figure out what's going on , or how to prevent it.

maybe media player uses fixed IP's, probably not though...
