"PayPal Buyer Protection you enjoy free protection up to £500"

From reading that I'm given the impression that if I buy something for £500 or less and I don't receive it or it arrives faulty I'll get my money back but from what I've seen today on the ebay help section when they say you're covered up to £500 all that means is if you get a rough deal they'll give you £175 and if the seller rejects your claim they pass it up a level. Not much detail on that at all.

I also didn't see anything mentioned about items over £500. The reason I'm interested in this is I've come across a few of the new Intel Core 2 Duo X6800 chips which at €693 they fall just under £500. I'm thinking about waiting until the year's out when a more powerful chip comes out but by that stage it will definitely be over the £500.

I of course would never buy from a seller with a bad record or short history trading but even with a perfect long record I'd rather know I was covered.

Is there a way around this? Have any of you encountered such a problem? What assurances should I look for? Is there some kind of insurance they offer that I've overlooked?

I'm not sure what you should do, but if you bought the chips from a proper
dealer, at least they would give you a guarantee.
    Whereas ebay is basically annonomous.

Personally I would go for the proper dealer, and also the fact that you're
posting paranoid questions just prooves that you're not expecting a good
    outcome from ebay.
I don't know how much a brand new chip would cost, but if ebay is so cheap
I would be asking the question: WHY?, is this so cheap.
It may be worth your while spending the extra on a new one.

But obviously the ball is in your court...

    So good luck buddy....:)

No I don't think I'm being paranoid, don't get me wrong I've bought things from ebay below €100 but I see anything above *£500 as alot riskier especially when it appears ebay will only give you back £175 if the siht hits the proverbial.

Yes it begs the question alright and at least if I bought it locally I'd could rest assured I have well... assurances :)

*ebay.ie gives the protection amount in pounds sterling.

Are the 26 counties included in this 500 from the seller and buyer perspectives?

Why dont you ask paypal and find out.

Yeah that's the thing it was given in sterling but I was definitely on ebay.ie. I'll give PayPal a bell tomorrow, I just thought someone here may have experienced it first hand this being the board it is.
