I am going into Transition year and am wondering what would be the best way to get work experience with a doctor. Would it be easier to go to a hospital or to a GP? Where would I get the most experience?

    Where do you live?

It's probably too late, but there's a great course run in the Mater in Dublin for 4th years aimed at people like yourself. I did it myself and it was the clinicher for me. Get in touch with Sandra Crawford through the main switch and they'll send out a form to you. It's a really popular placement though but hopefully they'll have a spot to spare. :)

I wanted to do something like that when I was in school(on my own time though) and most places said no on confidentiality grounds.

    Hi Conor,

Unless you know your GP quite well I would suggest you would be better applying to a local hospital. There is also the question of confidentiality as I presume your GP is in your locality therefore you may know some of the patients.

I think Tallaght hospital takes work experience students. I would contact the Office of the Medical Director to check it out.

    Good luck! :)

I used to look after transistion year students in Tallaght Hospital , If you contact the chief in laboratory medicine there, he might give you some information, if he doesnt he will at least put you in touch with someone who will. 4142000 is the number and ask for the chief of lab medicine.

On this subject some advice i will give to you is dont expect it to be exciting, you will most likely be do some filing, helping medical secretary's, things like that. For insurance reasons you will not be allowed to process samples, but you will get some good information about how blood tests are done and how a hospital works internally.

If you do follow this path it will also help you see if you are able to cope with the various bodily fluids on show, faeces, blood, urine, human tissue, trust me i have had many students coming in wanting to be doctors and fainting at the sight of blood, be prepared!
