Would I be right in thinking that the nikon viewfinder would be brighter than canon ,because it's a larger sensor???
Sometimes I find the viewfinder too small on the 350D and all starter canons have the 1.6 crop factor ,is the viewfider bigger and brighter on the D50,d70??

what do you mean "larger sensor"? You mean the CCD? The Canon entry level line (300,350 and the new 400) all are 1.6 AS ARE the Nikons.

Brightness of the view finder is nothing to do with the ccd.

nikons are 1.5, but yep the viewfinder on them is noted as being a little easier on the eye.
