Ok - I was away on holidays for the past 2 weeks. Got home & threw my shots onto the PC. I have now noticed (all too late) that there is a diagional line on the top right hand side of some of the shots (I must have had a mark on the lens or something!!)
Anyway, can anybody advise of an easy way to clear it up?
If you want to comment on the few examples then please feel free!`

I had a very quick go of tidying up the first one for you in photoshop (see attached) using the clone tool. Thats probably the best way to do it. your second pic will need more precise work, but thats the best thing i can think of. Im sure some others will have other ideas.

Its a pity, because the pictures are quite nice I guess its a lesson learned to always clean the lens!:)

nice work captain p, i like the shots , only quibble is they're slightly 'same old', technically quite good tho, would like to see more.

haven't a clue what caused that weird banding

    Thanks a million Captain P.

Mele - I agree with you 100% that they are very "done" BUT ......... I am very new to photography so to me the experience of taking them is new .........

Have you taken any shots since cleaning the lens?

Kinda panicked when I read this so it was straight out with the camera & I took a picture of my new dog ........ just got her today (about 30 minutes ago actually!!)

    All seems ok! Phew!!

    Awwwww, cute :)
Try taking a similar shot to the ones in the first post. Make sure your aperture is stopped well down if you have a Dslr or just make sure it's really bright if you have a point and shoot.

Quick touch-up up the 2nd image:

    IMG_1291(b).jpg

    in Photoshop CS2:

    1. Selected affected area with rectangular marquee tool.
    2. Copied selection to new layer.
    3. Added a small amount of smart blur to remove the mark (radius: 3 / threshold: 4.5).
    4. Added layer mask.
    5. Used the Brush tool (with foreground colour set to black) to paint on the layer mask to bring back detail areas such as the sun rays and clouds.
    6. Flattened layers.
    7. Sharpened with Unsharp Mask (amount: 10% / radius: 30 / threshold: 0)
    8. Saved as maximum quality JPEG (quality: 12).

    Time taken: 5 mins.
