Problem with modem and dial up connection

I was trying to set up an internet dial up connection using a modem on my neighbouors pc today and ran into the followoing problem. The PC is using xp. Basically when i tried to set up the dial up connection (either through network connections or Internet options) it sets up to use COM1. Then it shows the device is unavailable or missing, even though it is recognised in device manager and it says it is using com port 7. The card is fitted in PCI slot 3 on the motherboard. I have swapped the modem to other PCI slots and have reinstalled the drivers to no avail. There is no yellow exclamation mark over the modem in device manager and I have had no problems with installing it its just that in the network connections applet in control panel it keeps saying the device is not recognised and that it must be using com port 1 when I go into properties. I have tried -Uninstalling and reinstalling COM ports and the modem, swapping the modem to other PCI slots, restoring XP, playing around with the BIOS and basically getting mad and swearing. Can any one offer any clues as to why this is happening.

    God I hate modems...
What I'd do is confirm that the modem works on another XP machine using the same drivers for a start.
Personally I find toiling over a troubled modem isn't worth the effort... if you can't get it working after trying the usual things, then there's probably something wrong with it... don't rule out fúcking it in the bin IMO.

It has been so long since I have worked on a modem, I can't remember anymore. :( Try the modem in another PC if you can sort that out perhaps?

Oooo er back to the old skool!

Ermm.... right as far as brain cares to serve me....if you look for the modem in Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager >> Modem if you right click on it and bring up the properties; you should find an option to Query Modem, a small log file should be created underneath and it should give you the COM port and whether it was able to see the modem sucessfully.

Unfortunately I threw my modem away when I got broadband (needed the extra PCI slot) so thats all I can really tell you

    Good luck matey

Put it in the bin and get broadband.
